Littledean Independent Chapel (General)

by Lawrencef ⌂ @, Trentham, Australia, Sunday, November 25, 2012, 12:19 (4376 days ago)

Can anyone tell me if the Littledean Independent Chapel still exists and if not can you explain where it was located?

I'm particularly interested in locating the original wedding entry records for this marriage Olive Beale # 1020559 but I just want to find out whatever I can about the chapel...

Regards and thanks in advance...

Trying to work out how Olive's maiden name was SMITH - on her wedding certificate her age is given as 30 c1884 - as Olive Elizabeth SMITH is given as c1888

Where are you now in your research?

Looking at the witness at the wedding i.e. John J CLARREDGE - is he the John on the 1911 census age 44, born Reading, Berkshire and living in Bournemouth? - He doesn't appear to have been a witnesses at any other witness on the Forest of Dean records!

There is on Military Records Ancestry

Hi,

It's all a bit complex but Olive Elizabeth Beale (nee Smith, later Millard) seems to have used the identity of her Aunt Eliza Smith b. 28 Jun 1884 (daughter of James Smith & Elizabeth Page Hughes) on more than one occasion. Due to the death of her parents when she was 2 Olive Elizabeth was bought up by her Great Grandparents Thomas Goode b. 3 sep 1820 d? & Elizabeth Pearce b. 20 Aug 1820 d. after 1901.

I have poosibly located the father of Olive Elizabeths daughter Maud Olive Millard. A family in South Africa contacted me and inform me that their grandfather was a william Ross and a bit of a "jack the lad". I'm trying to convince them that they ought to get DNA testing done, sadly my Grandmother Maud Olive passed away in Ausgust at the age of 91. I'd hoped to resolve these mysteries in her lifetime so that the information might be of use beyond curiosity. They have not warmed to the idea of a bit of DNA testing thus far but I'm working on them :-)

I know all about Olive Elizabeth Smith until the birth of her illegitimate son Lovell Glendower Smith (b.1907 d.1944) in 1907, then nothing until her marriage to Samuel Millard in 1914 (b. 17 Sep 1854 d. 1934). It's that period where she becomes a Beale but I can find no records at all that might suggest a link to her (I've investigated the marriage of Ada Smith to Beale in Gloucester but it is conclusivley not her).

I pick up the trail again in 1920 with the birth of Maud Olive Millard (b.1920 d.2012) and her enscouncement with Joseph Caldwell in the mid to late 1920's and subsequent child (Patricia Marcia Millard/Caldwell b.16 Jan 1928 d. 21 Aug 1998)and immigration to Canada, then New Zealand and her death in 1974.

I'm sort of ahead and sort of stuck as per usual... :-)

Really sorry I ought to have mentioned that I know quite a lot about Lovell. Soz to take your time on him...

I don't have a clue who his father was but think that I have located the ship he took to Australia in 1920 "Hobsons Bay".

I have records for him around Australia and his pay slips for his work at Sydney water prior to enlistment and subsequent death in WW2. I also have the window worked out for when he changed his surname to Tresham (but don't know why he did this). I visited his wifes grave a year or so back and got all the estate papers.

I'm pretty certain that my Olive Smith is not the Olive Smith who is married to Charles. I'm not 100% on that but I looked into that connection and there were records and a trail for them both in Wales coming to the FOD...

This is interesting tho and I haven't come across this record before...

I'm pretty certain that the Fathers forename mentioned above refers to James Smith (b.1842 d.1912) who is the father of Albert Smith (b1868 d1891 Runcorn), Olive's father i.e. his great grandfather who bought him up.

Lovells birthday was 4 May 1906 so it must be a transcription error. :-)

As Lovell Glendower SMITH birth was registered in Cheltenham District and born Cheltenham 1911 census - was Olive in service there? Cheltenham College had a Military past
- one of only two school (the other being Eton) to have its own military colours.

e.g.

London Gazette 1906

'Cadet Corps - Cheltenham College - 2nd Volunteer Battalion the Gloucestershire Regiment - William Nassau Weech, Gentleman, to be 2nd Lt - 28 March 1906'

- and Lovell Glendower seems an unusual name to give a child, and some 'unmarried girls' did give their child part of the father's name.

My lateral idea is that maybe the inspiration was Owen Glendower - the Welsh Prince from the time of Henry IV....

Hannibal Napoleon David Thomas Alfred ("Nap") Cordy was my grandfather, and his brother was Duval Alfred Lovell Cordy, who family and friends called Lovell. He was named after his uncle, James Lovell Cordy. But I do not know how Lovell became a family name.

Hi, Sorry about the delay in replying, we've moved 9000km and resettled so the internet has been patchy.

If anyone on this list does genetic genealogy then you can serarch against my dna at http://www.gedmatch.com/ my id is f230110

I won't have the Lovell DNA myself, as he is my great uncle but I'd be interested in hearing of any matches from the FOD regardless.

I suspect that Lovell got the Glendower in his name from his unknown father as well as neither name is common in the family tree...

Ciao

Hi arriano,
I do hope you read this, I see you've not visited the forum for a month or so.
While browsing the internet I've just come across a superb original photo of Hannibal "aged 7 weeks", wearing what may be his Christening gown, posed with a young lady presumably his mother. The photo is a Studio portrait by a "High Street Cinderford" photographer, I was searching for items re my home town when I chanced upon this. The photo is not mine in any way whatsoever, if twere I would post it on the website. I hope this might interest you ?, if so please ask and I can send you details, it is available to purchase (not from me or anyone to do with me).

========================================

Question to the site's Administrators.

During my internet travels I often find old photos advertised to purchase, often quite inexpensive, which are relevant to the people of the Forest. I think it very sad such heirlooms are detached from their rightful family and always want to try to reunite them, or at least have them displayed on this site's Photos pages for all to enjoy. I suspect other forum users have found themselves in this position too. The photo of WW1 soldier Edmund Vimpany was a recent case in point.
However I know this forum clearly isn't intended as a trading post, so I'm unsure how to treat such items when found. In the case of Nap Cordy this great forum has enabled me to easily find a clear descendant, but usually it's not this easy by far. I hope this post is considered acceptable.

Please can someone clarify how, if at all, such "lost" family items may be broached on the forum ?.
Perhaps the website would like me to forward details of such finds to the administrators, with a view to your perhaps purchasing them yourselves for the Photo Gallery ?

Thankyou, Jeff.

Hi

Not sure of the etiquette on the forum re: photos. Slowhands or one of the admins might be able to give us a better idea of what to do.

If you set up an account with one of the following you can (with some of these services password protect them), giving access to FOD members by request. That would protect you against spurious copyright claims.

We have to be careful not to breach copyright and of course this is not a "pay to use" site so our funds are very carefully spent keeping the site running, and acquiring access to records that have the widest appeal. Now if there were more donations then the Trust would be better able to consider such investment.
