Hello
I am struggling to work out the Baptism record of the Joseph Wintle who married Elizabeth Hooper 24-Apr-1726 in Longhope

1. Joseph Wintle Bap 1-May-1705 Huntley parents Thomas and Elizabeth
2. Joseph Wintle Bap 19-May -1702 Westbury parents Joseph and Alice
3. Joseph Wintle Bap 14- Jul-1695 Westbury parents John and Jane (this one a bit to old at 31 and possibly married 24-Nov-1715 Westbury to Sarah Bellamy)
4. Joseph Wintle Bap 19-Oct-1697 Westbury parents Joseph and Alice (assume died young and name reused in 1702 above)

Favs are number 1 & 2 but which one ??

Does anybody have any info that would at least elininate any of the above
Many Thanks
Andy P

If either, then I'd put Huntley before Westbury - just on geography :-)

I'm new at Welsh genealogy, so I have more questions than answers, but I wouldn't trust guessing as the first 2 are two close in birth years to trust the censuses to have the birth years right. Do Welsh marriage records give names of parents? (I'm spoiled by all the Scottish research I've done- they give parents names/maiden names of mothers etc on marriage and birth, death too.) Also, the naming of the children could tell you something: is the first son named after the father's father? Does this happen in Welsh naming, as in Scotland? It's too easy to buy into the wrong family! One thing you can do is check censuses, progressive- more than one to look for the name to appear. Pre-census years! Help- that's hard, but you might find a parent living with the married couple as they age.

Gloucestershire Genealogical Database hold various WINTLE Wills

http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/genealogy/Search.aspx

These include the Will of Joseph WINTLE of Longhope 1730 **

and Thomas WINTLE of Huntley 1787.

It would be worth the investment to obtain these Wills.

**

Fod Records - 3 Oct 1730

Burial of Joseph WINTLE - residence: Hide

Parish: Westbury on Severn

-----

Looking at the Advance Search : Joseph & Elizabeth WINTLE had

a child baptised 1727, Joseph 1730, John 1730 and Robert 1737

So Joseph obviously a family name
