Saracens Head/ William Goode (General)
by debbiestjohns , Isle of Man, Sunday, December 30, 2012, 16:46 (4341 days ago)
Has anyone got information on William Goode landlord of the Saracen's Head, Symonds Yat in 1876. I have Jeremiah Goode and Thomas Goode as names in my Father's family back as far as 1802 and wondered if there was a link with William. I'm sure I found a link once and now I can't find it! a novice researcher. If anyone knows of a link or can point me in the right direction,I would be very glad.

Debbie, sorry I can't help with information on William Goode but I do have an Eleanor Goode (daughter of Thomas Goode, occupation listed as "mason" on Eleanor's marriage certificate dated 1854) in my family tree. She is my great great grandmother. Eleanor was born at Doward, Parish of Whitchurch, but her three older siblings Edward, Sarah & Maria were all born at "New Weir". Perhaps we have an ancestor in common??

Hi fred52- thanks for your reply' I have three Thomas Goodes but sadly I don't think any could be your Thomas Goode. Mine are 1806-1867 (3rd great grandfather) 1841 (2nd great grand uncle) and 1856 (great grand uncle)...there are so many Thomas Goodes!

Thanks again slowhands. Was I right thinking that William became the Inn keeper at the Saracens Head? He is my 3rd great grandfather, Sarah married into the Colwell family. I am very proud to say I am a daughter of a Morse road Colwell and so have a Forest connection.Thank you for all your help.

I have William Goode of the Saracens Head in my tree. I am related to his second wife Selina (Williams). They are buried at Whitchurch St Dubricus by the riverside and have a headstone. William was also a boat man - descendents ran a pleasure boat business at Symonds yat. William had some convictions for beer trade offences!
Happy to provide details.

Hi,
My husband's family is decended from William Goode and Ann Powell. Through their daughter Mary Ann and her husband Isaiah Prosser
Im trying to find out what happened to Ann Powel. She clearly died before 1841 as I now have William and Selina's marriage certificate from April 1841. They had only been married a few months when noted on the census.
There is a death cerficate for a fourteen day old baby called Ann Goode in 1837 that may be William and Anns.
The 1841 census indicated a Charles Williams age 2 - would he be Selinas?
1861 - I can't find William Goode. Selina is on the top of the page on the census written as 'wife' so I am assuming the page before has William on it but the page is missing from the sequence. Has anybody been able to view this? the pages look a bit damaged.
I would love to have any details regarding William, thank you
Tomorrow, I going with my Mother-in-law, husband and sister in law to stay at the Saracens Arms for the weekend. She is 84 this weekend, so we thought it would be fun to stay here so I can show her where her ancesters lived.
