Selby/Hawkins family (General)

by selbyfamily @, Thursday, March 14, 2013, 11:32 (4274 days ago)

Ellen Selby married Charles Hawkins in 1882. I am trying to update this family and have come unstuck with a couple of the children.

If David Adams sees this, could he contact me via e-mail regarding his line of the family (he seems to have changed his e-mail address since we last had contact).

I am also having trouble with Ellen's first child, William Henry Hawkins b 1886 - can't find a suitable death for him and the only marriage I can find would make him about 50 at the time. If there are any members of the Hawkins family out there who can help, perhaps they could contact me via e-mail or on this forum.
Thanks, Sheila Selby

Hi Sheila,

So where did he go?

I cannot find a reasonable match for a death / marriage in Chepstow registration district (yet) so perhaps he moved away.

South Wales was the centre of tinplate Swansea/ Port Talbot to Llanelly area in particular.

Thanks for your trouble Slowhands. However, I know there are several William Henry Hawkins of about the right age living in the Pontypridd area (where a lot of this family went) but equally they were born there and not in Fod so without the 1921 Census I think we are stuck at the moment. Maybe something will turn up - it quite often does if you wait a while!

Thought everyone would like to know I have now been contacted by a member of the Hawkins family and between us we have sorted out the family of William Henry Hawkins. He was married to Beatrice G M Bush in Sept q 1918 in Paddington and died in Bristol in 1969. Members of his family still live in the Forest. Just shows you must never give up searching. There is always someone out there who can help.

Thanks to all. Sheila

Hi Sheila,
thats great news to hear of a happy ending to your long hunt, thanks so much for posting !. Sounds like the good old GWR played it's part again ?...
No doubt like many of us I've found a few possible ancestors in London, it's easy to discount them as coincidental matches due to their apparent distance from home, but maybe not especially if they're in the Western end, what with Paddington railway station or even Paddington Canal Basin before that.
Indeed my mum always thought my dad's elderly mother was from London, purely as her sister lived there - it turned out she was the only one of eight siblings who'd left their Forest homeland, to work in service in Ealing. Yet when I did much the same 80 years later mum thought I was mad !!
Re my Longhope mum I have also been hunting some Hawkins' lately, originally from Tewkesbury way but married into our family, plenty of William & Henrys in there too. Perhaps we're related ?.

====================================================

Talking of me being "mad", yes I do follow Hereford United with a passion, thanks for asking. I have no family connection with the city whatsoever. However like all Foresters with a "real" understanding of roundball football they're the traditional automatic "local" team to follow..... yet sadly I know some poor unfortunates including my nephew who have sadly been drawn to the dark side and even dare I say it Ashton Gate, so very sad... ;-)
I guess it's an age thing; as a kid in the late 70s Hereford were successful with full houses and, having not seen live football before, their little stadium was an exciting place to go, regular buses ran from all over the Forest including my Cinderford home. My first memory of them was aged 10 visiting my nan's pub at Longhope in '73, watching the Newcastle FA Cup game on MOTD in her sittingroom, and "that" goal. I recall it was a busy, happy, night; we usually visited if they were extra busy so dad could help behind the bar - I still drive past the pub on the main road from here (West London) via Gloster for football, so I like to think there were some happy fans in that night on their way home from the game.
I know quite a few Foresters of my age or older who still follow the Whites, including some despite having to move far away for work. Up until the 80s or so they were heavily covered by the Forest issue of the Gloster Citizen paper, more recently that had to switch to young upstarts Cheltenham Town for business reasons. Quite understandably given our poor showings these last few years my nephew also visits Ashton Gate, I think influenced by his driver dad - he took me to my first game there, a late 70s First Division game against Birmingham, to watch Trevor Francis just before he became Britain's "first million pound player - a relative bargain now !! A year or two later I worked with a City fan who took coaches from the Forest to their away games, in the interest of young romance I saw City well beaten at Anfield, Wolves, etc etc; but my heart was and still is with the Whites, especially after City miraculously stopped us getting to a Wembley Final in 86 !.
Thankfully and unlike many other lower/nonleague clubs HUFC are known & even fondly regarded throughout the land, part of Cup folklore, which makes it easier to support them especially when living so far away. Judging by both our clubs' current form it seems possible that we're be playing City again in a few years, something I thought impossible 15 years ago, but if little Cheltenham can be on the verge of it now then so can we ..??. On that depressing thought for your family please accept my sympathy to their current plight, I know how dismal they must be feeling at the moment, but when all is said and done it really is ONLY a game despite what others have famously said.
atb Jeff.
(Seriously tho' I applaud all who follow their local(ish) team, at any sport, especially unglamourous & largely unsuccessful ones like ours...).

Slowhands, the birth and census entries are what I have. Thanks.

Jeff, I will have a look through your information and see if anything rings a bell. Lots of this part of the Selby family did move to South Wales but not having a census to check with makes things more difficult.

From what I have found, there are lots of members of Ellen and Charles family still alive in the Forest area so it may be one of them will see this post and be able to help.

Thanks again. Sheila

Jeff,
I have looked at the Monmouthshire Parish Registers and the marriage you mention is to Kate Hendy on 1.4.1906 at Bedwelty. Unfortunately, William's father's name is just given as "Hawkins" so no help there. Found one child Eva Hawkins, b 5.9.1906, Bedwelty. Will see what more I can find on her.

No problem Sheila, thats good research insofar as one "possible" is ruled out.
Yes William Henry was a popular nameset in the area in those days, I've seen plenty in my Jones researches, grr ;-)

Your earlier post mentions your checking Monmouthshire Parish Registers. Are these available online without subscribing to Ancestry etc, if so where please ?

Altho it could be Kate Hendy, perhaps this is more probably the same Kate/Katherine (Hawkins) that appears in the 1901 & 1911 family Census as William's sister, but maybe not just that in later years ?.

In general, when I searched the FoD Hawkins PRs earlier Viney Hill Chapel appeared regularly in my findings, eg William Henry Hawkins b1884 of Yorkley parents James & Sarah.
Coincidence or ??. I suggest you search all Hawkins PRs for Viney Hill abt then for more possible similarities.

Hi again Sheila,
I've just been searching for William on LDS and wonder if the following leads are worth further investigation ?. As you know there are a lot of William Hawkins to consider and even William Henry Hawkins, so it's a puzzle, but I have tried to be specific based on his birth year to narrow things down.
Hopefully your FindMyPast access will help sort these "possibles" very quickly.

William N Hawkins, "England and Wales Census, 1901"
Name: William N Hawkins
Event Type: Census
Event Date: 31 Mar 1901

Age: 16

Birthplace: Lydney, Gloucestershire
Schedule Type: Household
Registration District: Monmouth
Sub-District: Coleford
Ecclesiastical Parish: All Saints Viney Hill
Civil Parish: West Dean (Gloucs)
District/Parish/County: Monmouthshire

Could this "N" be a misheard "Hen" ??. Or is it just a transcript error. The age and particularly location fits ?... is this the same William as per your 1901 Census records ?, sorry I cannot find rest of the household.

I know FindMyPast has some good Army Records, I wonder if these men bear further checking ?

William Henry Hawkins

by selbyfamily @, Monday, March 18, 2013, 07:41 (4270 days ago) @ Jefff

Hi Jefff

Thanks for all the information. Taken a while to answer as I am suffering from a terrible cough and cold. Feel a bit better this morning! I had checked out all the relevant military records but they give the place of birth and not one of them belongs to our William Henry unfortunately. Military and Passenger Lists are the first port of call when someone is missing! William was with his family up to 1911 so none of the census entries people refer to belong to him. Can't see any connections with Wedmore - no relevant deaths there. I understand there are some nice shops there if you want a wedding outfit!
I'm pleased to see you support Hereford United! What is your connection? I am a Hereford girl myself though I'm afraid this household now supports Bristol City for their sins!

There are other Hawkins in another part of the Selby family but don't know if they re all connected. Will look into this sometime. Hopefully something will turn up for William in the future. Will keep looking and thanks for your help.
