James Whitson (Witson) (General)

by janger @, Monday, April 01, 2013, 15:03 (4256 days ago)

James Whitson born 1845 married Tabitha Herbert (born 1848) in 1868. She died in 1883.
Did James remarry and/or went on to have any more children?
Two of their children were in the workhouse at Westbury in 1881. Barbara and Rosanna. I believe Rosanna died there.

Thanks Jeff, Did not realise they had a son George, but thought they had just four daughters. As Tabitha died quite young, I did wonder if James re-married. As James is quite a common name it is hard to link him later in his life.

You're very welcome. Yes a few spelling possibles there to make April Fools of us.
The beauty of the Advanced Search feature is I could search and quickly view all the Baptisms for surnames starting "Whi" and then "Wit", tried both with father's forenames "Jam" then "Jas"; ditto the GlosBMD site.

Yes I could have done that, my minds not working well due to tiredness thro illness... I just wanted to help out. However your approach wouldn't have been successful as per the original query it was believed that James fathered more children after Tab had passed away...

Hi Mike, Thanks for all the information, will have to digest it all. I do have some of the information you have given me but once again thanks.

James Whitson (Witson)

by shepway @, Tuesday, April 02, 2013, 15:56 (4255 days ago) @ janger

Did James Whitson remarry you ask.

There is a marriage as follows:
Marriages Jun 1890
Evans Mary Westbury S. 6a 502a
Whitson James Westbury S. 6a 502a

And we find them in the 1891 Census:
James Whitson abt 1849 Ruardean, Gloucestershire, England
Mary Whitson abt 1861 Ruardean, Gloucestershire, England Wife
Thomas Evans abt 1885 Ruardean, Gloucestershire, England Son
Maud Evans abt 1889 Ruardean, Gloucestershire, England Daughter
Rose Whitson abt 1891 Ruardean, Gloucestershire, England Daughter
Sarah Evans abt 1831 Ruardean, Gloucestershire, England Mother-in-law

There is a suggestion that Mary had married before. This is the birth registrations for Maud (do not be confused by the surname Abbott as this will become clearer later):

ABBOTT Maud ABBOTT ABBOTT EVANS 1889 Gloucester Gloucester, South Hamlet 56 8

But no evidence of a marriage can be found. This is Mary Ann with her family in 1881:

John Evans abt 1838 Llangaron, Monmouth, Wales Head
Sarah Evans abt 1832 Longnewton, Wiltshire, England Wife
Mary A. Evans abt 1861 Cricklade, Wiltshire, England Daughter
James Evans abt 1864 Sison, Somerset, England Son
Thomas Evans abt 1866 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Son
Sarah Evans abt 1869 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Daughter
Millicent Abbott abt 1873 N K, Gloucestershire, England Visitor

Birth registrations for children:

WHITSON Rosa WHITSON WHITSON EVANS 1891 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, Newnham 61 235
WHITSON James Matthew WHITSON WHITSON EVANS 1892 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, Newnham 63 183
WHITSON Nora WHITSON WHITSON EVANS 1894 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, East Dean 1 385
WHITSON Alexander WHITSON WHITSON EVANS 1895 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, East Dean 2 463
WHITSON John WHITSON WHITSON EVANS 1897 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, East Dean 5 135

Next we have the 1901 Census in which there are stepchildren listed:
James Whitson abt 1847 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Head
Mary A Whitson abt 1861 Cricklade, Wiltshire, England Wife
Frederick Abbott abt 1882 Gloucestershire, England Stepson
Tom Abbott abt 1884 Gloucestershire, England Stepson
Maud Abbott abt 1889 Gloucestershire, England Stepdaughter
James Whitson abt 1893 Ruardean; Woodside, Gloucestershire, England Son
Nora Whitson abt 1895 Ruardean; Woodside, Gloucestershire, England Daughter
Alix Whitson abt 1896 Ruardean; Woodside, Gloucestershire, England Son
John Whitson abt 1898 Ruardean; Woodside, Gloucestershire, England Son
Sarah Evans abt 1831 Longnewton, Wiltshire, England Mother-in-law
George Abbott abt 1886 Gloucestershire, England Stepson

Searching the Gloucestershire BMD Index we find 13 children with the Surname Abbott and mother's maiden name as Evans:

Child Surname Child Forename Father Surname Mother Surname Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
ABBOTT Alice Ada ABBOTT ABBOTT EVANS 1875 Gloucester Gloucester, South Hamlet 33 380
ABBOTT Benjamin James ABBOTT ABBOTT EVANS 1877 Gloucester Gloucester, South Hamlet 36 150
ABBOTT Edward ABBOTT ABBOTT EVANS 1870 Gloucester Gloucester, South Hamlet 26 270
ABBOTT Frederick Alfred ABBOTT ABBOTT EVANS 1882 Gloucester Gloucester, South Hamlet 43 390
ABBOTT George Edwin ABBOTT ABBOTT EVANS 1887 Gloucester Gloucester, South Hamlet 51 409
ABBOTT Hubert Josiah ABBOTT ABBOTT EVANS 1868 Gloucester Gloucester, St John the Baptist 16 289
ABBOTT John Thomas ABBOTT ABBOTT EVANS 1874 Gloucester Gloucester, South Hamlet 32 136
ABBOTT Male ABBOTT ABBOTT EVANS 1867 Gloucester Gloucester, South Hamlet 22 169
ABBOTT Mary Elizabeth ABBOTT ABBOTT EVANS 1886 Gloucester Gloucester, South Hamlet 49 412
ABBOTT Maud ABBOTT ABBOTT EVANS 1889 Gloucester Gloucester, South Hamlet 56 8
ABBOTT Millicent Mary ABBOTT ABBOTT EVANS 1872 Gloucester Gloucester, South Hamlet 29 112
ABBOTT Oliver Edwin ABBOTT ABBOTT EVANS 1869 Gloucester Gloucester, Kingsholm 12 287
ABBOTT William Henry ABBOTT ABBOTT EVANS 1866 Gloucester Gloucester, South Hamlet 21 97

There are 2 possible marriages:

Groom Surname Groom Forename Bride Surname Bride Forename District Parish Building Year Register Entry
ABBOTT Benjamin EVANS Charlotte Gloucester Gloucester St James 1869 29x No 2 419
ABBOTT William EVANS Mary Gloucester Gloucester Register Office 1866 6 20

Following the second one in the Census we have:
1871 Census
William Abbotts 29
Mary Abbotts 24
William H Abbotts 5
Hulbert I Abbotts 3
Edwin Abbotts 17

1881 Census:
Barton St Mary, Gloucester
William Abbott abt 1843 Worcestershire, England Head Widowed
William H. Abbott abt 1865 Gloucestershire, England Son
Hubert J. Abbott abt 1868 Gloucestershire, England Son
John T. Abbott abt 1876 Gloucestershire, England Son
Allis A. Abbott abt 1877 Daughter
Benjamin J. Abbott abt 1878 Son
Elizabeth Evans abt 1862 Bristol Servant
Edwin Abbott abt 1857 Worcestershire, England Boarder Brother (Boarder)

This tells us that Mary had died and this is the registration:
Deaths Jun 1878
ABBOTT Mary 32 Gloucester 6a 184

Referring back to the list of 13 births we can account for:
William Henry
Hubert Josiah
John Thomas
Alice Ada
Benjamin James
Millicent (with the Evans family in 1881 - see above)

So we check the remainder and find the following deaths:
Deaths Jun 1867
Abbott Male 0 Gloucester 6a 163

Deaths Sep 1869
Abbott Oliver Edwin 0 Gloucester 6a 153

Deaths Sep 1870
Abbott Edward 0 Gloucester 6a 234

Of the remainder the following are with James Whitson and family in 1901:
Frederick Alfred born 1882
George Edwin born 1887
Maud born 1889

and this leaves us with Mary Elizabeth born 1886.
In 1891 she is with Robert Allard and family in Gloucester but I have not traced her in subsequent Census returns. However looking at the 1901 Census for William Abbott he has a daughter Lily aged 13 living with him and in the 1911 Census William is with his daughter Lillian Church aged 24. Could this be Mary Elizabeth as we do not have a birth registration for Lillian Abbott.

Questions that remain:
Who is the father of the Abbott children born subsequent to the death of Mary Abbott nee Evans in 1878.
Is James Whitson who married Mary Evans the James Whitson who married Tabitha Herbert.

Thanks Mike this is going to take some sorting, The age of James Whitson who married Tabitha ties up with the James Whitson who married Mary, so I am thinking this is the same man. James Whitson (who married Tabitha) father was George. I have yet to find the wife of George. James is my Great grandfather. George is my g.g grandfather all on the maternal side of the family. I have gone the direct line of paternal side, that is why I am now going down the maternal side. Anyway thanks for all the info.

James Whitson (Witson)

by Brian Meek @, Tuesday, April 02, 2013, 17:44 (4255 days ago) @ janger

Hi, I've only just picked up on this. I have James Whitson in my family tree.
In the 1851 census he is aged 5, living at, and it looks like Upper Bilson, with his father Matthew Whitson born 1822 in Littledean and mother Hannah nee Penn born 1824 in Ruardean. Siblings are Thomas 3 years old and Mary 2 months old. Not sure about the Abbott connection, I'm still working at it. My only question on James's second marriage to Mary Evans is, If she had married Benjamin Abbott prior to James Whitson, why isn't she Abbott in the second marriage?? Her mother Sarah Evans is shown living with the Whitson family in the 1901 census

Hi Brian, Do you have a Tabitha who married James Whitson in your family tree. I am not sure whether Matthew and Hannah are my Jamesd's parents only because on his marriage his father is named as George. Saying that Tabitha's father is also named George. Could this be a mistake and Mstthew and Hannah are my James's parents.

I am not sure whether Matthew and Hannah are my Jamesd's parents only because on his marriage his father is named as George. Saying that Tabitha's father is also named George. Could this be a mistake and Mstthew and Hannah are my James's parents.

We would need to check the image / or a BMD copy , it may be an error in transcription.

James Whitson (Witson)

by Brian Meek @, Thursday, April 04, 2013, 17:58 (4253 days ago) @ janger

Hi Janger, this is the family of Matthew Whitson and Hannah Penn as I have it in our family tree. I feel that the fathers name George as shown on the marriage transcript is possibly a mistake.

James Whitson 1846 - 1904
Thomas Whitson 1848 –
Mary Ann Whitson 1851 –
Sarah Jane Whitson 1853 – 1900
Louisa Eliza Whitson 1857 – 1910 (My wife's great grand mother)
Rhoda Whitson 1859 –
Eliza Ann Whitson 1863 -

So you also asked about James Whitson and Tabitha Herbert.
They were married 6th January 1868,at Holy Trinity Church, Drybrook. Tabitha died in April 1883 and was buried 1st May 1883 in Ruardean graveyard. In the 1881 census it states that she suffered from fits.

Benjamin Abbott married Charlotte Evans nee White in 1869.

ABBOTT Benjamin WHITE Charlotte Gloucester Gloucester St James 1869 29x No 2 419
ABBOTT Benjamin EVANS Charlotte Gloucester Gloucester St James 1869 29x No 2 419

This is the 1871 Census entry:
Name: Charlotte Abbot
Age: 34
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1837
Relation: Head
Gender: Female
Where born: Gloucestershire, England
Civil parish: Wootton Ville
Town: Wootton Ville

Registration district: Gloucester
Sub-registration district: Kingsholm

Folio: 49
Page Number: 20
Household Members:

Charlotte Abbot 34

I think Mary Ann Evans was a Spinster when she married James Whitson but it would appear she had children by a Mr Abbott prior to her marriage. See my earlier posting.
