Good evening FOD Squad, I know how much you enjoy solving my brickwalls, so I thought you might like another one ;-))
1851 Census
Charles Bowden, 1811, born Devon
Mary 1823, Devon
Elizabeth,1848, Chepstow.
Charles, 1850, Chepstow.
I have searched the Parish Records and found just one entry, Charles Bowden, died 1851 age 2, no births listed or a marriage for Charles and Mary.I have also checked the Gloucestershire BMD Indexes.
By 1861 they were in Cardiff, Elizabeth and Charles Jnr.are gone, but there are three more children,
Mary A. 1852, Chepstow,
Susanna, 1855, Cardiff.
Sarah, 1857, Cardiff.
On the birth Certs for the Last two children, mother's former name is ALES.
Any help would be very welcome.
Regards,
Margaret

Thank you Slowhanda, I have followed up some of your info.
I found this Marriage, but I dont think it is the right Mary. Probably its the Mary Ann Rachael EELS b1821 in Southwark.
Mary Ann Rachel EELS married in Shoreditch 1839 to ?, there is a choice of four on the same page, I can't work out which one yet.
Just a coincidence, a Charles BOWDEN was in Shoreditch in 1841.
Also in 1841 a Charles BOWDEN and a Mary EALES were living in Broadclist, St. Thomas, Devon.
I still can't find a suitable marriage for Charles and Mary, it is possible they had both married before.
I will have to do some more digging.

Thank you M.
I can now rule out Charles BOWDEN, Shoredich, one down.
Not sure about the Clark/Eels, I will try to find them in 1851, Mary was with Charles by then.
I have been trying to match a married name of Mary Eales (plus variants), to a marriage to Charles Bowden (plus variants) It may take a while. Its too cold for gardening anyway.

Margaret

Thanks M, another one off my list.
I am making a list from Devon and Gloucestershire now.
When Mary said her name was ALES, she could have meant something completely different, maybe she lost the 'H', as in 'Vorest Speak' or even 'Kairdiff Langwidge' that would open up a few more lines, I can't wait!
When I searched the Parish Records for BOWDEN/ALES, I found an interesting entry
John AYLES, occupation, Gentleman, residence, Ringwood Hants. married Sarah Ann PALMER,a shoemakers daughter from Chepstow.
It would have been nice to think that he was Mary Bowden's brother, who came to visit and fell for Sarah. There must be a story there somewhere.
