by DFR @, Wednesday, July 03, 2013, 16:47 (4156 days ago)

I am trying to help a relative find the location of a gravestone in Lydney Churchyard.
Name: Harvey James Lord.
Born 1927. Lydney.
Died: 16 December 1931.
Transcript Details Record F.O.D.
ID:267106.
Entry No. 1328
Residence: 20 Severn Road, Lydney.
Age at Death: 4.
Minister: L.P.Jones, Vicar.

I believe Harvey is on the edge of the churchyard with I seem

particularly with reference to the GlosFHS CD which should help you by the sound of it, I'm pretty sure this is the cd referred to.

Hi Jefff,

Thank you for your reply. Just to clarify, I now live in Cornwall, used to live in Lydney for 29 years. The relative lives in Worcester and will be visiting Lydney soon.
Both my wife and I have been doing our family history.
I am not asking for anyone to make a special visit. I just wondered if anyone had a plan. I note your info about the CD being available.

I seem to remember, I think, that the grave was on the left hand side of the path, coming in through the larch gate and walking down towards the railway bridge. I think it wasn't very far down the path. But I might be wrong?

Best Regards

David Brown

I have made an enquiry to someone who knows someone who might remembers the Lords of 20 Severn Road. I'll let you know if anything helpful comes back.

Thank you Peter.

There were 7 children in total, between 1923 & 1932.

The Father "William Henry Lord", worked for the railway at Lydney Engine shed.

I have some background material already, but of course anything new would be appreciated.

Best Regards

All good stuff! I'm trying to find out if the present occupants of the house know anything, and I might be able to find something out from W H Lord's time at the engine shed as he must have been a contemporary there of my father's cousin Frank Sterrey whose son is still around in Lydney. I'll post anything useful.

Hi Peter,

Thank you for your message and for your efforts.

We believe they left Severn Road in 1932 and moved to Worcester, as William Lord moved to Worcester shed.

I have picked up all the railway records for him, in 1915, he was a clerk at Lydney Shed.

Best Regards

I have checked the CD and there is no mention of Harvey James Lord in the index or the MI list. There is a plan of the churchyard on the CD if you come across a grave reference No.

The only LORD Surnames mentioned are George LORD died 1922 aged 62 (from the kerb round the grave No 140 in section C shown on the CD plan) and his wife ROSA LORD died 1938 aged 80 (with the same grave reference as George). Are these people other members of the same family? I have put the wording in my notebook just in case you might want it.

The CD only covers the Churchyard at St Mary's, There is a "municipal" cemetery on the opposite side of Church Road but I don't know of any CD's or online searchable records for this cemetery.

Sorry I cannot be more help on this.

Dear May

Many thanks for your reply.

Thank you for looking the details for me, it is very kind of you.

Yes those are the grandparents of Harvey Lord. Perhaps that is the grave that I can remember visiting and I was hoping that Harvey would have been close by.

I haven't got a grave reference number, only the details that I got from FODFHT.

Yes I am aware of the one on the other side of the road, as my Mother/Father and Grandparents are their. I wasn't sure when they started using that park though. I lived in Lydney until 1974, as Harvey was buried in 1931.

My wife is one of your transcribers, in fact that is what she is doing at the moment, having received a new CD today.

Best Regards

Age at Death: 4.
Minister: L.P.Jones, Vicar.
Memoranda: Unbaptised.
Register Reference: P209 IN 1/37. Page No. 166. Parish Chapel: Lydney.

The comment unbaptised may give a clue, as you may be looking for a burial in un-consecrated groud / or a reserved area(?)

So entering churchyard by the gate opposite Lych Gate Mews, https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?safe=off&q=%22lych+gate+mews%22&ie=UTF-8&ei=...

walking down towards the foot bridge over the railway line..

on the left (north ) is the Church and (this morning) freshly cut grass around various headstones / graves - these are mainly older headstones and many are well worn.

On your right is another well tended area with recent ( post 1900 ?) graves, maybe 50 yds down a path heads right ( south) along this path are several small graves for children in the period 1930 - 1945 (ish) very sad...

including :-

Year: 1941
Month: Jul
Day: 4
Surname: TOVEY
Forenames: Elizabeth Aileen
Residence: Stanford Road
Age_at_death: 1
Officiating_Minister: A J Lumbert Curate
Event: Burial
Cause_of_death:
Memoranda:
Notes:
Register_Reference: P209 IN 1/38
Page_No: 36
Parish_Chapel: Lydney

You will also see on your right, heading down to the railway line is the "wild" Nature conservation area, where some headstones are visible but its almost impossible at this time of the year to access..

I did not spot Harvey Lord's resting place.

Help required for location of gravestone LORD Lydney

by DFR @, Friday, July 05, 2013, 17:24 (4154 days ago) @ slowhands

Hi Slowhands,

First of all I owe you my thanks for taking the trouble to go to the churchyard and looking for the grave and also the all the other family research that you have carried out.

I think you might be right concerning the unbaptised bit, because there was a family story, that the vicar at the time refused to have Harvey buried in Lydney, because he hadn't been baptised, but he was persuaded to change his mind.

You had me confused at first, by the entry opposite Lynch Gate Mews, as I presume that is the new housing estate that is their now. I remember when the farm was there!!

I will pass all your information on & suggest she wears boots for her visit.

Thank you again

Kind Regards

David B.
