Many thanks for your thoughtful and speedy reply. Not sure how much time I shall have today, but I shall pursue your thoughts as soon as I can, and report back.

(Yes, an entirely unwarranted assumption that all marriages were 'formal' and all babies baptized ! ... though from what I've read it was a fairly conventionally 'religious' society.)
