Have been trying to track down the census address of Thos James in 1851. Township "West Dean", District "Christ Church", addresses all 'Lane End'. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cbennett/westdean1876.htm lists a number of different Lane Ends in West Dean. Any way one can tell which this is ? Or are they all related ? (Fascinating previous thread about a tapestry, where it was decided it was Broadwell Lane End; but I couldn't see why !
Thanks in advance, as ever, for any guidance.
Lane End, West Dean ?

I could be wrong but I think all the "Lane End"s are in the East Coleford area; my sister lives at the village of Coalway, it's on the old road that leaves the bigger "capital" town of Coleford and heads east towards Speech House then Cinderford. In bygone years Coalway was called Coalway Lane End, and was distintly separate from Coleford. However and much like Coalways nextdoor neighbour Broadwell, to all intents and purposes a modern map shows these villages are now more or less linked and are the outer suburbs of Coleford.
If you havent seen it the Old Maps website is truly excellent to see how the area evolves (and place names too) over time, it can be atricky site but once mastered is very rewarding, especially if like me you have a "thing" for old Ordnance Survey maps. This old thread should help you.

I think in terms of identifying which specific Lane End is mentioned, if its on a Census Return, hopefully reading the adjoining Census pages to find neighbouring places on the (walked) route of the official enumerator will guide you.
Must go, would love to chat more but laundry and supermarket (grrr) beckons...

Very helpful, Jefff. Have an old OS map on order, for that purpose, but it hasn't appeared yet. I'll see what I can do with the site's maps section.
And I know what you mean about adjacent pages: I've done it with our area, which is a minefield unless you can work out what route the guy walked !

I have my family records and they can state either Coalway, or Lane End, or Coalway, Lane End, or Coleford, or West Dean or any combination of these. I know my family referred to it as Coalway Lane End in the 1870s.

Thanks for that, s/hands. Solved. I did find the whole area on one of the early on-site maps here, and stupidly have been entirely unable to find it again; the maps seem to keep jumping about, and turning into a 'parishes' map. But it was clear that a) that there are several Lane Ends, and b)that they are all more or less in the same area.

PS. and looking at E Coleford on Google earth, one can see why there are several Lane Ends - all the Lanes leading East from Coleford must indeed have ended there. Thanks again !

Hoorah, back from the supermarket too, what a fun three hours that was.... normally takes one but my fault for leaving it until the dreaded Friday, I'm spare almost every day to boot, duh... Sincerely hope MPG was visiting more "interesting" shops.
Re Lane End even nowadays the main road out of Coleford is fairly small, and back in the day they were definitely lanes, the OS maps will show this plus the historic tracks & "rides" thro the Forest, in the days long before cars.
Re the Maps on this site, find this page from the Main "Homepage" menu via the icon at top left of your screen.

As you're beginning to find, this site carries a great wealth of things beyond the Forum, I suggest devoting an evening or two and a glass(or two) of something and methodically go thro' each and every section, your efforts will probably be rewarded.
And if you don't find it, most subjects you can imagine have at one time been discussed on this forum, so carefull searching may reveal usefull prior threads.

Thanks, Jefff ! Having delved back with the Parish Records just about as far as I can with reasonable certainty (and probably further with less certainty !), and having located most of the places mentioned in PR's, censuses, John James's will, etc, I think it's now time to pause to reflect awhile.
Just been ring-binding the whole lot together in some sort of order; shall now mull it over for a bit and let the dust settle - probably, as you suggest, with a glass of wine or two ! But thanks again to yourself and all other posters, without whom very little of this would have been possible. Cheers !
