John Wintle abt 1768/ Sarah Hill abt 1768 (General)
I am searching for any information about their parents. John and Sarah married 26Aug 1788 Chapel Leigh. Sarah lived in the parish and John in Llansamlet ( spelling varies in docs) Glamorgan. Their child James, my GG Grandfather eventually lived in the FoD. Some Ancestry trees suggest John's family originated in the FoD and also Sarah's mother was Mary Wintle who married John Hill
I would appreciate any information anyone might have.
Many thanks
Gill

From this site's PRs I see both witnesses were born at Tirley and buried at The Leigh, so suggesting the above marriage is at The Leigh north of Gloucester towards Tewkesbury (and not the one near Longhope on the Herefordshire border as I first thought !).

A quick search for Sarah's baptism shows an awful lot of Sarah Hills in the general area eg Newent .... ???
FamilySearch site has this intriguing Marriage which is, presumably, a coincidence that shows just what a difficult search you've set.

Be warned that site has abt 100 PRs for "Sarah Hills, born Glos, 1760-1800", and a further 70 in nearby Herefordshire !!
I hope this link to these findings works for you.

Many thanks Jeff for so much information and at 1am! I am living in NZ opposite end of the world. I will F/U the new info. you have sent. Particularly interested in the area of the Forest you believe they came from. The family eventually settled in Whitecroft and my knowledge of the FoD is the Lydney, Yorkley and Viney Hill area. I knew little of the Wintle family apart from my Grandmother.(Elizabeth Green nee Wintle).
Cheers Gill

Recently I noticed lots of errors on the familysearch.org site.
Just in case anyone is interested.
1. John Wintle bap 16 Aug 1759 Newland, son of George of the Scowles & Anne
2. John Wintle bap 11 Nov 1759 E.B, son of William of Carterspiece & Elianor Worgan.
George & William were brothers, therefore their sons were cousins. Neither of these John Wintle's marr Sarah Hill.
The John Wintle who marr 1788 at Leigh Sarah Hill, was bap 4 May 1760 at Tibberton, son of Jonathan Wintle of Longhope.
I have documentation to prove my research, sorting out ancestors with common names is not easy but with effort, time & money it can be achieved.

Hi Anthony and thanks for your help & prompt reply, much appreciated especially as it comes from someone who has already done the hard-slog research and is clearly knowledgable on this family, all unlike me of course.
It's very interesting & helpful to me that you mention errors on the familysearch aka LDs site, thanks. When I started my FH journey abt 3 years back all the guidebooks I read warned to be wary of errors in their findings, however reading other more experienced posters quoting that site on this forum encouraged me to trust them a little more, hence my post. You're the first poster I've read confirming the LDS site does include errors, so thanks for reminding me of this fact. However I think it is still an excellent general resource which is often correct, particularly usefull if nothing else is readily available such as in my reply on this query.
Sad to say I'm a little confused by your posting the two John Wintles b1759, apologies but please clarify where they fit wrt the original query, are you correcting errors in the LDS site or ???, many thanks.
How interesting that there is afterall a Longhope link to this post, small world !
I suspect your difficulties trying to contact Gill direct were due to the site maintenance outage, I do hope you've been able to make contact now. Thanks so much for offering to help and so soon too.
Regards, Jeff.

Hi Jeff
I have been in contact with anthonyworgan out of the FoD web. Is there any way to check that the web has my correct email contact or as you say maybe it was due to the changes being made. The new sight looks great congratulations to all those that are involved with managing this amazing resource.
Kind regards to everyone involved including all the participants,
Gill

Hi Jeff,
Just seen your post, got side tracked on another puzzle. Yes, I have made contact with Gill now (problem solved - a missing letter from email address) & passed on I hope helpful information.
Regarding the 2 John Wintles, I mentioned this because I have found on several internet sites - (Ancestry public trees - LDS submitted trees & a couple of others on the web (over the years) the mix up between them & the John Wintle of Llansamlet.
This is where people have given a descent from George Wintle c 1688-1732 of BerryHill/Joyford to John Wintle of Llansamlet.
The 2 John Wintles bap 1759 (one at Newland & the other at English Bicknor) were cousins & the grandsons of the above George.
Whereas John Wintle of Llansamlet bap 1760 Tibberton was the son of Jonathan Wintle 1732-1803 of Longhope & grandson of John Wintle 1692-1750 of Longhope.
Hope that is as clear as mud - great fun this genealogy hobby/passion but oh boy it can get very complicated!!!
