Updated Web site and Forum (General)

OK so you are here and can now see the first major update to the site in 9 years :-)

The look and feel has been refreshed with some "drop down" menus to aid navigation

We have moved the website from America ( hands up if you thought it was in Australia ) to the UK.

There are a number of new additions to complete now that the major step has been taken and we will update you on those. The transcribers have been busy and there are a few new data sets to make available.

As always we aim to keep this resource a free to use service, however there are costs involved in running any web site, ours is no different so if you are able to make a donation it will be much appreciated and will help keep this web site "alive" along with the major efforts of our volunteers.

Can I take this opportunity to thank Mike for all his work and effort , planning and executing the update and move.

best regards

Slowhands on behalf of the Team

Dear slowhands,
I have used this site as a registered member for quite a while now and have found it thoroughally useful, especially the indexed parish registers. I have never had difficulty using this site until this morning. I appreciate you have made alterations but try though I have I cannot access parish registers. Why?

Jeremy

Welcome and your first post in 2 years using the site.

We are looking into this - I am using Windows/Explorer and can access the Parish records under RESOURCES drop down click on PARISH RECORDS then search PARISH OF DEAN RECORDS

are you trying to access via a saved bookmark that took you straight to the parish records search ? if so you will probably need to resave the new page as your bookmark

S

Embedded in the previous threads you may find links to forest-of-dean.net, as we find then we will change them , where possible, to forest-of-dean.org links

Hint - "spam" settings and junk mail

One thing that you might like to check is that your e'mail spam settings are not "catching" email from our new .org.uk domain name.

A couple of questions/comments on the new site:

On the previous site, there was a link on the Parish Registers page to a database of what records were transcribed by whom, for what years, etc. I don't find that link exists (or is very well hidden.) Can you point me to where that information is found now or restore that feature to the new site? (The information is necessary in order to create sources for the information obtained here.)

While the design of the new site conforms to current trends, the actual implementation makes reading the search results in the Parish Registers difficult. I use Firefox as a browser and find that I'm now faced with two scroll bars, side-by-side, both of which have to be manipulated to view the longer records, or to even see the initial results. At least with my browser, about a quarter of the page at the bottom is unused. It doesn't appear that the site is set up to sense larger displays and is defaulting to an 800x600 view (long ago outdated.)

Thanks,

Mark

thanks for your feedback - we will investigate the screen res - I have tested on various resolutions and devices from iPhone thru to 1900x1200 flat-panel

The list of transcribed records is currently not available- we will reconsider how/where to reinstate

Updated Web site and Forum

As well as viewing this site from my computer I also view via an android device. Before the changes I was able to view everything through both means.
I concur with the points raised by jezboaz, about parish registers and by mkel2000 about the list of transcribed records and the page view of the site.
I now find that whilst I can see from my computer I am unable to view from my android device.
Can you give any guidance?

Thanks Paul
your comments are noted - a lot of testing was done before we cut over to the new site and there is background work going on to pinpoint the code that is the root cause of this display issue. It seems to be related to correctly detecting the visible surface / resolution of the access device or how the display device is handling the "code" that we send you from the website.

I have replicated the problem on my Blackberry, which limits the Admin work that I do "on the move".

this will be fixed , but at the moment a stable work around is not available. sorry.

A number of tweeks have been put in place over the weekend to address the display of the updated site by various devices, from desktops thru laptops and tablets to handheld devices, browsers from IE 9 / 10 , Safari and Blackberry.

There are many more out there / many combinations to consider; the code has been written with portability / access by various platforms in mind :-), however the volunteers developing and testing have a finite amount of time to give and platforms to test on. Hence from time to time "odd" things may happen !

Great work folks!

One request: if you could eliminate the use of double scrolling, that would be easier for people to navigate - I am not sure if that is something you want to do because in the forum, for example, you will have to have 'page x' on the bottom to prevent the scrolling.

I like the colors and so far I have been able to find everything I've needed.

You've made it look easy - but it might be helpful to let others know just how many hours this type of revamping took. It was a labor of love, I'm sure.

Cant access parish records!

by Joanne @, Monday, September 09, 2013, 10:16 (4088 days ago) @ wamorgan

Hi guys

I am having a problem accessing parish records today. I am signed in as usual but when I click to search parish records like I always have done I am just getting the message on screen that only registered users can access the records and that I should sign up! I wouldn't be able to write this message if I wasn't registered would I - any ideas?

jo

at that point did you try to log in to gain access or just give up ?

I am trying to understand if your "logged in" status has been refreshed/lost
I have seen similar behaviour under testing (once) I went to the Register link and then Logged In rather than try to re-register.... As I said I had seen it once and could not repeat it...

It's odd isn't it? I am logged in as I see my name top right with User, Log Out and search parish records next to it. It's when I click on search parish records (I want to look up a marriage) that I get the message on screen in red that says only registered user can access the records so I should log in or register. Never had this problem before!

Jo

As part of the upgrade we moved the databases/web site to a new platform, one of the availability options was to spread it over several servers.... What we suspect is happening is that, unknown to you , you are logged in on a specific server, but your "search" request is being serviced on a different server.. that server may not have the current "logged in " status for you.

Once this suspicion is confirmed or otherwise we will be better able to "fix" this specific glitch.
