Hello,
I'm sure you are aware of it by now and probably resolving the issue as I type but I am unable to access Advanced Search, the wheel just keeps turning but it doesn't load the form.
Just thought I'd report the problem

Problem with site

Hello
I reported a problem with this site several weeks ago on the Forum. The problem has not been resolved and I have searched Forum for my post and it does not appear so I will try again.
I can log in and search the basic parish registers form but if I click on Advanced Search the wheel just keeps turning and I never get to the form.
Do you know what the problem is and how to resolve it, is anyone else experiencing the same difficulties?
Regards and Good Luck
Ralph
Problem with site - Advance Search

I find the Advance Search isn't as instantaneous as it was (use AppleMac, not sure if it's just my computer)
The message
'Select the event type you wish to search then click the search link'
Stays on the screen longer, before the page appears.
The results page now spans much wider across the screen, and I have to scroll across and down to see the last columns. For me, the new Advance Search is not as user friendly and I seem to have problems changing the search from births to marriages and deaths etc. and generally using the Advance Search.
Get the message
'Select the event type you wish to search, then click the search etc'. Click on each heading to no affect - and today it has the message - Sever problem etc.

In short Advanced Search is not working. In addition when I log in and then go to Forum I am asked to log in again before I can post. There is something quite out of order with the new hosting that was not a problem with the old. As a result I have been unable to work on my research project for weeks. Quite depressing

Ralph
the new site has only been running for less than a fortnight so quite why you have not been able to do your research for "weeks" is a mystery.
If Advanced search was not functioning the Team would have put that functionality on hold and worked on a fix . I agree that there may be a slower response from time to time, and that is being looked into.
I have said before this is not a Commercial site, it is run by volunteers who do the best ( and often give far more than is realised) to enable you to access records and do research - perhaps you do not appreciate that.

Hi
I guess by the tone of your reply, I may have offended you, in which case I apologise, for that was not my intention. Email does encourage a certain directness of approach in those that use it a lot and it is easy to forget how our words may sound to the reader.
I was not intending to sound annoyed or pushy but to convey the fact that for me at least I have been unable to use Advanced Search for what has certainly felt like several weeks. I frequently access the site on an almost daily basis during bouts of research conducted over several years. It is likely therefore that I had problems with Advanced Search the very day the new site went live.
I reported it that day, as I did the other problems and after having returned to the site a couple of times since only to experience the same problem, I decided to search Forum to find out whether my earlier report had received a response that might explain the problem. I could not find my posting.
So, I was a little frustrated but there was no desire to annoy anyone on my part, in fact I have been very supportive of the voluntary spirit of the site in my previous posts and having been researching my family history since 1998, I am particularly understanding of the huge contribution sites such as yours make to the family history community and to me. The fairly recent loss of Mike's Monmouthshire family history website has hit me badly, further demonstrating the value of your work.

You posted on the 6th and we replied within a couple of hours
performance issues are often hard to track down, we are in dialogue with the hosting company and exploring a few possible areas with our code.
You asked again on the 12th and again last night; we understand your frustration and are working to isolate the issue.

Advance Search and the site refresh

Thanks to Mike for his efforts in tweeking the Advanced search code
The major migration and update has been a big undertaking for a volunteer group. I know that most of the regular users appreciate the value of the resources made available here and the continuing work by the transcribers and others to bring you fresh content. Indeed some of the messages we receive reflect the horror that we have been off-air , even for a short period of time.
So again big thanks to Mike and the Team for all the backroom efforts that they give to keeping this site alive and well
regards
S

Hi
This morning, I was able to access and use Advanced Search, so thanks a lot for sorting out the problem I was experiencing. I will say it was something of a shock to see the new layout (I wonder whether that might explain my previous issues), although on this occasion there was no interminable wait, the page opened immediately. I do hope the new layout won't affect cut and paste.
Anyway, thank you for being so patient with me.
Regards Ralph

Hi
Thought I'd report back on my Advanced Search use this morning. Cut and paste is unaffected by the changes in Advanced Search, so that's good.
However, something that will affect your visitors is that the list of results brought up in Advanced Search do not show the parish to which each record applies, you have to open each record in turn to discover which parish they originate from. Searching common names yields a very high number of records, so the user initially only has "occupation" to distinguish between the records, rather than parish which is the more useful.

Pleased to read that you are now able to access the Advanced Search.
The Parish is displayed in the initial results and can be seen by moving/scrolling the display from right to left. Not ideal we would agree and we will see if we can change the set up so that the information can be seen without any manual intervention.

If you have WINDOWS 7 (maybe other versions) you can try right-clicking on the frame, selecting "This frame" and opening in a new tab. This should let you see all the columns at once.

Apologies. Meant to add that you need to be using Firefox.
