by admin , Forest of Dean, Saturday, September 30, 2006, 16:52 (6621 days ago)
After reading through the postings about the Roll of Honour project I am
interested to hear if there is any mention of Edwin WATKINS who was killed in an
accident at Waterloo Pit on the 15 February 1923.
Edwin was Born 1871 at Ruardean and was a younger brother to my
great-grandfather Joseph.
Thank You

Yes, David we have him. Although I was a little confused at first because the pit is down as Arthur & Edward (Waterloo), and the record called him Edward rather than Edwin. As both you and Slowhands refer to him as the latter, I will pass this on before we have the books printed!
I expect you already know the cause of death was a broken neck due to a fall of coal.
Checking back on my own research contibution to the project, I discovered we also recorded non-fatal accidents, so I guess there's quite a lot more information waiting to be used in various articles etc!

Thanks for the information. I was not aware that the cause of death was a broken
neck due to a fall of coal. I was only told that he died of an accident at the
mine these details were passed down to me through several generations of the
family.
It would certainly be Edwin if the dates coincide and all the records of him
show him by that name and not as Edward.

I should have mentioned that our date for the accident was also 15 February 1923, so that's pretty conclusive ... and we don't have any other fatal accidents at the mine for four years before or after, so not much chance of a mix-up!
They were obviously not always that accurate though, because they had his age at death as 56 ... and if he was born in 1871 I make it 52.
Anyway, I have notified those in charge of the list, so hopefully he will be recorded by his correct name in our Roll of Honour books.
