RIP Lewis Stanley GOODE b1891 Mitcheldean, WW1 Soldier (General)
I have just noticed that the abovementioned Gloster gentleman is also auctioning a set of WW1 medals for a Private Lewis Stanley GOODE. Again he has done a nice job of researching Lewis, even including a photo of his CWGC grave in Gloucester Old Cemetery. The seller helpfully advises that Lewis was born in Mitcheldean abt 1892 and was living in Barnwood Gloster in 1901. Following WW1 service in the 20th Hussars as an original "Old Contemptible", Lewis sadly died in Colchester Hospital on 31 March 1915. Being an important Army town I presume this was a Military Hospital. The auction page has more information and clear photos of this brave man's well-deserved Medals etc.
Given the circumstances it seems likely that Lewis was a relation to the aforementioned George John Goode, also from Mitcheldean. Searching this forum for Lewis confirms this, this prior thread most helpfully includes;
"1901 Census, Glos. Barnwood, District 11
Arthur BIRCHER - age 33, Builder Carpenter, born Glos Hucclescote
Elizabeth BIRCHER - age 29, born Mitcheldean
Children:
Ethel 5, Mabel 4, Fred A - 2 and Christopher age 1 (all born Barnwood)
plus (which turns out on the 1891 census to be Elizabeth's family)
George G GOODE - Boarder, age 13, Errand boy, born Mitcheldean
Lewis GOODE - age 9 ditto
Alfred E GOODE - age 7 - ditto"

This thread goes onto to confirm the Constance family link I mentioned in my post abt George Goode.
I cannot find Lewis within this site's PRs, but GlosBMD has;
Birth Details
Child Surname Child Forename Father Surname Mother Surname Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
GOODE Lewis Stanley GOODE GOODE CONSTANCE 1891 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, Newnham 62 139
This link is for his CWGC entry

As yet Private Lewis Stanley GOODE is not included within this site's WW1 Soldiers database, not surprisingly given he moved out of the Forest while quite young, I'm sure that Dink and/or Martin will include him in due course.
R.I.P. Pte L.S.Goode, 4763 20th Hussars.
These websites about the 20th Hussars may be of interest, Colchester was indeed their home barracks. The unit, probably fighting in the trenches as dismounted Infantry by the time Lewis became a casualty, certainly saw some very stiff actions.
"First World War.
The regiment crossed to France on 17 August 1914 with a strength of 24 officers and 519 rank and file to join the rest of the "contemptible little army". The 20th Hussars formed part of the British cavalry that covered the gap between the British Expeditionary Force and the French 5th Army.
The regiment arguably took part in the first cavalry action of the First World War, and became involved in actions that were typical of the role played by cavalry in that conflict. The retreat from Mons, the battles of the Marne and the Aisne and the First battle of Ypres all saw the regiment involved and fighting as infantry from trenches in the Messines area."
