James Gibbs born 1799 (General)
by lizlochh62, Thursday, May 15, 2014, 11:07 (3839 days ago)
Hi, I am looking for any information on James Gibbs please. He married in Worcester an Eliza Willis, I think. He was born in Gloucestershire in 1799. One census says Gresburg but there is no such place. It looked a bit like Gisting to me, which is close to Temple Guiting, but I'm only guessing. He was down as a retired tollgate keeper. I seem to remember seeing another relative going down another family line was a tollgate keeper too.

Hi again, I'm not sure if it's the same Gibbs. The 1841 and 1871 census I found puts James in Worcestershire. Pershore in 1841 and Padmore Street Worcester in 1871. My mum is all happy I found that address because she currently lives there and it is making her feel nostalgic.
If you think, for definite it is the same James, however, I'll add it to my tree. You are much better at accessing information than I am, thanks for the help. regards Liz
Gibbs - tollgate keepers

Highly unlikely I'm sure, but did James have any relatives working tollgates near Exeter ?
See bottom-lefthand "Loggerheads" on this link.

Glad you've found my other suggestions of interest, all the best to you and yours.
(ps a little "spooky" this - I've just realised that immediately before logging into the forum today and seeing your post, I was emailing a friend to watch a "Who Do You Think You Are?" repeat on tv tonite. And yes that episode is about a Gibb, in this case Robin. Maybe the surname's not as unusual as I was thinking a mere 10 mins ago !)

Gibbs - tollgate keepers

Thanks for that. I read the Exeter info. It was interesting. Maybe in those days, they had toll gates everywhere just to make a little income, cus I noticed one of those Bromyard relatives was a tollgate keeper too.
I think Gibbs is quite a common name in the Worcester, Gloucester area, as I went to school with one!
Thanks and regards Liz
