The original Parish church of St John was built in about 1821, restored in 1862- the octagonal "nave" was demolished leaving the clock tower in center of Coleford. ( The octagonal shape is unusual , however a similar style can be found in Parkend )

However a new church was built in about 1880 in a more elevated position.
