Could you remind me who was held responsible for Matthew Tingle's death?

No person was held legally responsible for the death of Matthew Tingle. The inspector of mines identified insufficient ventilation (only one shaft which collapsed)at the Middle Duffryn as a significant factor. Lack of awareness of the relative explosive nature of the Middle Duffryn seam being worked was another factor. Thomas Powell, the mine owner, and his agents acknowledged some responsibility for the initial accident. Charles Henry Ackerley, a renowned lunatic, was charged with manslaughter for having visited the Tingle household a week following the accident and having through violent manipulation of Matthew's entire body caused or at least hastened,in the opinion of the attending physician, the death which occurred soon afterwards. Mr.Ackerley was found not guilty, a decision which resulted in international criticism at the time and ever since.
