Hello there,
Thanks for that. I have traced the family back to Staffs and then onto Derbys. It was just that on Jesse's birth certificate it stated Strides and I was curious as to the locality within Longhope.

As a long shot, is there any possibility that the place could be read as Sutridge? This place is (or was?) about a mile north-west of Blaisdon towards Longhope. I imagine it was in Longhope Parish.

Looking at the 1861 census they lived in the area round about Velthouse Lane ('Felt House')and Nottwood Hill ( Notwood/Nottswood). Really on the edge of Longhope and Blaisdon. The cottages didn't have names so 'Strides' is unlikely, maybe a transcription error or the Forest accent rearing it's head again. Sutridge as mentioned before is a possibility. It's just a very small patch of the right area. There is a Sutridge Farm and a Sutridge House on Velthouse Lane, no doubt other cottages too roundabout. Several footpaths run through the area, it's quite pretty especially in the spring.
And there is 'The Steps' nearby, a bit of thinking out of the box!!!

Hello Mike,

Thank you for that info. It sounds very much as you have hit the nail on the head. I shall investigate it further. Local terminology can be confusing. On my father's birth certificate the place of birth given had been changed 20 years before but the locals still used the old place name.

I wonder if we shouldn’t be looking a little further north than Sutridge. There is an image of Jesse’s birth certificate on Ancestry which, to me, reads ”Slads Longhope” as the birthplace. The progression of the 1861 Census seems to be from Blaisdon Rectory through the village and then back to the Red Hart Inn and the School. After that it goes out to Velt House, and then two cottages before arriving at The Mount. This latter is in the Nottswood Hill area, just south of Little London (some maps show two places named as such within a short distance of each other).

Next is another cottage, followed by Rough Lease which is marked on modern maps as being just where the well next to the Ley Brook (just under the name of Little London) is marked on the map above. Six cottages on from that is the Cockayne’s residence. Just the other side of Little London is an area called The Slade on old maps and The Slad on modern ones although it’s not absolutely clear where its boundaries might have been. After that there are sixteen more cottages before we are back with named places in Blaisdon Parish (Pimbury, White Hall, New House Farm, Stanley Farm, Brickhouse Farm). The area seems to be just where the parishes of Longhope, Blaisdon and Huntley meet.

Had a look at 'chellist' family tree on Ancestry with the copy birth certificate of Jefse COCKAYNE - father Edward, Journeyman Sawyer, and agree it does say quite clearly, Slads, Longhope

Hello Mike,

You're right. I am a bit dopey at the moment. School holidays and watching grandchildren!!
The birth certificate is the one I sent for years ago. I am looking at it now. I should have looked before. Where Strides comes from I don't know.
However, that is another matter. You mention quite clearly directions the location. So if I followed your directions on a modern map would I still be able to find the area?

Hi there,

If you search Little London, Gloucestershire, on Streetmap the Level 1 zoom will allow you to see Rough Lease. My best guess is that the COCKAYNE family lived in a cottage around the Chapel Lane area (also marked on Level 1 zoom). Of course, since the cottages were not generally named in the 1861 Census, it is impossible to say which one but there are plenty marked on the 1884 map and it now seems likely it was one of these. The extent of The Slad (or Slade) in 1861 I have no means of knowing but it could have extended more south than Streetmap would imply.

Hello Mike,
thank you so much for that. I generally like to visit places where my ancestors came from. A few years back I had the opportunity to stay in Longhope but was too busy sourcing evidence at the Record Office so didn't have much time to check out where he was born. They didn't stay there long but moved on to the Cinderford area.
Thank you again.
Tricia.
