Alice Nelson Jones Forest of Dean (General)
by Mandy61 , Skipton, North Yorkshire, Tuesday, October 07, 2014, 20:31 (3694 days ago)
I'm trying to search for my 2nd great grandmothers family. The only census records I have are after her marriage to Edwin Taylor in 1884 in Staffordshire, aged 21 which gives her birth year as abt 1864. on the censuses her place of birth is Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire. Her full name and the name on the marriage cert is Alice Nelson Jones but the only birth I've found was in Warwickshire and the fathers name is wrong, he was William whereas Alices father was Richard Jones, he was deceased by the time of her marriage and his occupation was a coal miner.
Any help would be very much appreciated, I've been trying to find this for years and still get nowhere.
Thanks.

Hi
Thanks for that info...I have all that already, I have her marriage cert too. It's the birth and her parents I'm struggling with, the only birth for an Alice Nelson Jones was 1859 in Warwickshire which is not the right one as it's 5 years earlier than her birth year on the censuses and it also gives a different name for her father.
There doesn't appear to be an Alice Nelson Jones birth in Gloucestershire and I'm beginning to wonder whether the 'Nelson' was added later, but in the family bible it gives her surname as Nelson. Her father on her marriage cert is Richard Jones, so the Jones part is right, unless she was adopted?
Thanks again for looking, it's very much appreciated :)

Here on this site there are many people who are more than willing to help with your research. However, to do so they require you to give as much information as possible. In responding to your original posting I attempted to help researchers by giving some of the detail. You say that you have information from a family bible and marriage certificate. It may be helpful if you are able to share that information. Also, when you registered you declined to have your email address contactable. You may wish to review your decision.

I didn't realise I'd declined to have my e-mail registered, I will try to amend that.
The details I have are as follows:
Alice Nelson Jones born abt 1863 Gloucestershire.
Father Richard Jones...no more information on him.
The family bible gives the marriage of Alice Nelson Jones to Edwin Taylor, the only other details in there are the children, there are no details of the father Richard or any of the Jones family, just the Taylors. Alice and Edwin married at Lower Gornall, Sedgeley, Staffordshire 15 June 1884. Alice was a spinster aged 21, Edwin a bachelor aged 23, both were residing at Bromley. Witnesses James Clark, Maria Bate.
The census details are listed in the post.
Children of Alice and Edwin:
Alice Maria Taylor born 31 March Pensett Stafforshire. Married Joseph Blakesley 27 March 1904, Rawmarsh, Rotherham. Moved to Crosshills then Farnhill, North Yorkshire in 1929. Alice M died 21 Nov 1965 in Raikeswood hospital Skipton, N Yorks.
May Taylor born 28 Aug 1885, Staffordshire, died the same year.
Hezekiah Taylor born 4 Dec 1887, Brierly Hill, Staffordshire. Spouse Florrie White, married 17 April 1911, Rotherham. I don't have a death record for Hezekiah.
Florence Taylor born 9 Feb 1890, Parkgate, Rawmarsh. unmarried. 1911 census patient in Wadsley lunatic asylum, Ecclesfield. No death date.
George E Taylor born 31 March 1891, no more details.
Albert Edwin Taylor born 14 Dec 1893, died 8 May 1894, Rotherham.
Edwin Taylor born 22 Nov 1894, no more details.
Edwin Taylor spouse of Alice N Jones was born Kingswinford, Staffordshire 1862. Died 3 Nov 1894.
Alice went on to marry Godfrey Thickett in Rotherham in 1895. They had five chldren:
Elizabeth born 1896 Rawmarsh.
Walter born 1900 Rawmarsh.
Caroline born 1904 Rawmarsh.
Thomas born 1897 Rawmarsh.
Arthur born 1901 Rawmarsh.
Alice N Jones (Thickett) died 13 Jan 1921 in Rotherham.
That is all the main details I have on the family, I do have census records and probate, military etc for other members of the Taylor family including my Great Grandma Alice Maria Taylor (Blakesley).
I didn't intend to offend anyone in any way, I totally appreciate the help given.

First of all I support Paul's comments. Secondly I have looked at this case and decided to start by looking at baptisms with names similar to the ones given. I appreciate that this is a long shot but here goes:
First of all a baptism:
Year: 1865
Month: Mar
Day: 1
Parents_Surname: MALSON
Child_Forenames: Alice
Fathers_Forenames: Richard
Mothers_Forenames: Caroline
Mothers_Surname:
Residence: Mitcheldean
Occupation: Miner
Officiating_Minister: C E Dighton Rector
Event: Baptism
Memoranda: [Daughter of]
Notes:
Register_Reference: P220 IN 1/4
Page_Number: 27
Parish_Chapel: Mitcheldean
Then the first available Census:
1871 Census
Household schedule number Given Name Surname Relationship Age Estimated Birth Year Gender Birth City Birth County Birth Country
19 Thos Brepryton Head 45 1826 Male Colesbourne Gloucestershire England
19 Sarah Brepryton Wife 44 1827 Female Mitcheldean
19 Janet Brepryton Daughter 16 1855 Female Coberley Wiltshire England
19 Ellen Brepryton Daughter 14 1857 Female Coberley Wiltshire England
19 Thom Brepryton Son 12 1859 Male Coberley Wiltshire England
19 George Brepryton Son 10 1861 Male Coberley Wiltshire England
19 Angus Brepryton Daughter 8 1863 Coberley Wiltshire England
19 John Henry Son 6 1865 Male Coberley Wiltshire England

19 Caroline Matson Visitor 38 1833 Female Mitcheldean Gloucestershire England
19 Alice Matson Visitor 6 1865 Female Mitcheldean Gloucestershire England
This tells us that father is not with the family so we look for a burial:
Year: 1867
Month: Oct
Day: 23
Surname: MALSON
Forenames: Richard
Residence: Mitcheldean
Age_at_death: 40

Event: Burial
Cause_of_death: [not sta
Memoranda:
Notes:
Register_Reference: P 220 in 1/9
Page_No: 81
Parish_Chapel: Mitcheldean
Next the 1881 Census and we find Alice in the area in which she married:

Hello Mike,
This is not a long shot, there is a reference to an Alice Malsom in my family bible but I didn't realise it was in relation to this side of the family, the bible is very sketchy with details and wasn't completed, there were no other details of Alice Malsom just her name.
I have been trying to find her for over 15 years and got nowhere, no wonder. I wonder why her father was named Jones.
I apologise if I came across as offensive, it wasn't intentional and I hadn't realised that my e-mail address wasn't logged, I've now amended that. I do go onto some forums for help and usually just expected to be concise so once again please accept my apology.
Thankyou for your help, it's much appreciated and I can now add these details to my family tree and hopefully carry on with more research into this family.
It's nice that there are people like yourselves who are willing to take time to help other people and I myself try to do the same for other people when I can.
Regards,
Mandy.

Hello Paul,
I would have mentioned her earlier if I'd realised the significance, as soon as I saw the details on here I knew it was the right one, it makes sense now, it seems obvious that the registrar who completed the marriage certificate mistook Malsom for Nelson. It feels such a relief to know now after all this time and I can't thank you all enough, I really am in awe of how you find these things so quickly, this forum was my final avenue as I'd tried just about everywhere and everything else and was about to give up hope.
My great grandmother was a lovely woman, she was the one who wrote the family bible details, it makes me wonder if she didn't know much about her father Richard as he wasn't mentioned at all, neither was her step father John Jones, just her husbands family the Taylors. My grandmother died last year aged 99, the house belonged to her mother and I'm in the process of sorting the house, that's where I came across the bible among other papers and certificates of her mothers. There was nothing there relating to the Jones or Malsoms.
I will let you know if I find anything else of interest with the Malsom/Jones families then it may help other people who may be researching the same family.
Many thanks.
Mandy.

Just a thought, I think it may be worthwhile me sending off for her second marriage cert to see if anything is any different on that one ie her middle name and her fathers name.
