by g1ldi, Tuesday, December 02, 2014, 18:57 (3644 days ago)
We are researching our family tree and have got stuck concerning the wife William Thomas Jackson who was one of the basket making Jacksons who lived around Westbury on Severn on The Strand. We need information concerning his marriage and wife. On the 1901 and 1911 census she is down as Ellen or Ellen L Jackson but we can't find any marriage details.
Can anyone help please?
Many thanks, Chris

Referring to the 1901 and 1911 Census returns we know that the children are: Thomas W., James C. and Stanley G.
A search of Glos BMD Index gives us the following birth registrations:
Child Surname Child Forename Father Surname Mother Surname Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
JACKSON Thomas William JACKSON JACKSON ARNOLD 1894 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, Newnham (from 1893) 1 199
JACKSON Charles James JACKSON JACKSON ARNOLD 1895 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, Newnham (from 1893) 1 369
JACKSON Gilford Stanley JACKSON JACKSON ARNOLD 1898 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, Newnham (from 1893) 2 370
This tells us that mother's maiden name is Arnold and a search of the Marriage Index gives this entry:
Groom Surname Groom Forename Bride Surname Bride Forename District Parish Building Year Register Entry
JACKSON William ARNOLD Ellen A Stroud Stroud Register Office 1894 RR/30 70
We then find a baptism in the Parish Registers on this site:
Year: 1860
Month: Jul
Day: 8
Parents_Surname: ARNOLD
Child_Forenames: Ellen Avisa
Fathers_Forenames: Samuel
Mothers_Forenames: Ann

Officiating_Minister: Chris Jay Jones Vicar
Event: Baptism

Notes:

And this is Ellen in the 1861 & 1871 Census returns:

135 Prisciller Jane Arnold Daughter 6 1865 Female Westbury on Severn
135 Alfred Aurthur Arnold Son 16 1855 Male Westbury on Severn
From this we see that her father's name is Daniel and not Samuel as in the baptism transcript so this needs to be checked.
This is Ellen's birth registration:

Hi, welcome to the forum.
Just in case you've not already seen this paragraph from the Westbury entry within the excellent British History website;
"The demand for fruit-baskets and putchers for fishing made basket-making another local trade. Several persh (or osier) beds recorded in 1839 were presumably connected with the trade, and there was a basket-maker at Rodley in 1856. The Jacksons followed the trade at the Strand from the 1890s and later at Broadoak where one of the family still made baskets and putchers in 1969; another maker specialized in fruit-baskets in the early 20th century. A sieve-maker was recorded at Elton in 1608."

Thank you for all who replied - and so quickly!
This has cleared-up not only my wife's great grandmother's details but also the link to Stroud which we knew existed but not how. Stroud was, of course, quite close to The Strand - particularly for families like the Jackson's who made not only baskets but putchers and coracles so Stroud was just a boat ride away. In fact at low tide they knew the river well enough to cross on foot so missing the tide was a little like missing the last bus!
Thank you for the exert about the basket making. I think this was about Lionel who has sadly passed away but his son Eric (77) is still practicing the craft and has been out on the river with putchers on Griff Rhys-Jones's The Rivers program and more recently with James Martin. I believe Eric is one of only 4 licensed to take salmon with putchers from the Severn.
Again - THANK YOU!!

Better late than never, regarding the mentions of the Jackson family making baskets at the Strand, Westbury on Severn, I've just found these entries within the 1876 Morris & Co Trade Directory for the town.
"JACKSON Joseph, farmer, Broad Oak
JACKSON Richard, carpenter, Broad Oak
JACKSON Thomas Edward, basket maker, Strant"
See http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~cbennett/genealogy/westburyonsevern1876.htm
Searching Thomas in FamilySearch, GlosBMD and this site's PRs.
