Thank you for all who replied - and so quickly!

This has cleared-up not only my wife's great grandmother's details but also the link to Stroud which we knew existed but not how. Stroud was, of course, quite close to The Strand - particularly for families like the Jackson's who made not only baskets but putchers and coracles so Stroud was just a boat ride away. In fact at low tide they knew the river well enough to cross on foot so missing the tide was a little like missing the last bus!

Thank you for the exert about the basket making. I think this was about Lionel who has sadly passed away but his son Eric (77) is still practicing the craft and has been out on the river with putchers on Griff Rhys-Jones's The Rivers program and more recently with James Martin. I believe Eric is one of only 4 licensed to take salmon with putchers from the Severn.
