Hi Slowhands. I replied to your post yesterday but it appears to have been lost in the ether, so will try again.

I imagine that whilst not shown to be linked, this posting relates to my posting seeking Australian assistance regarding an “alleged” William Marfell being the father of Joseph Baldwin born 1864 to Winifred Baldwin.

If so, I am very pleased that you share my view as to the likely canditate !!
I have 1463 Marfell’s in my Family Tree going back to the 1500’s and have details of every Marfell birth, marriage and death registration from 1837 to 2004 and have over 600 certificates. There are 4 William Marfell’s within the age range to be the father of Joseph Baldwin born 1864, but of the two which appear most suitable geographically, my money is on the William Marfell, you have featured on this posting.

What is not obvious from census data alone is that in the 1891 census, where he is shown as a lodger, the lady he is lodging with he eventually marries on 24.8.1896 – Maria White, so they were both 51 at marriage. She is described on the 1891 census as a widow with 3 children born between 1881 & 1885, however on her marriage certificate she is shown as a spinster with father George White, as shown on the 1851 Census :

1851 Census West Dean
WHITE George 41 Engineer Coleford
Maria 38 East Dean
John 16 Engineer Stafford Mine Bilston
Eliza 13 East Dean
George 11 East Dean
Alfred 9 East Dean
Thomas 7 East Dean
Mary 5 East Dean
James 1 East Dean

I know that none of the children were registered as Marfell, but I suspect that William is the father, indeed one of the children - Millborough was registered as surname White, but on her marriage to Isiah (a.k.a. Sire) Williams 31.3.1902, the certicate shows her surname as Marfell and father as deceased William Marfell.

I have the birth, marriage & death certificates for the William Marfell of this posting, he was born 16.11.1845, baptised Ruardean 3.5.1846.
