Hi, would love to find any information about my grandparents, Ernest John and Emily Woodward, who lived at Cobrey circa 1930's/40's
My mother, Jonquil was born there in 1940.
I can only find records of their deaths on the parish records.
would like to hear from anyone who knew them, or anything about them.
Thanks in advance!
WOODWARD, Ernest John, Emily, Walford parish.

Hi Deeds, welcome to the forum. Am I right thinking this couple seems to have travelled around the UK quite a lot, was this because Ernest John followed his father and became a Church Minister, perhaps including Castle Frome Herefordshire ?
From this site we have their Burial Records, as you know;
Record_ID: 1000287
Entry_Number: 605
Year: 1961
Month: Oct
Day: 13
Surname: WOODWARD
Forenames: Emily Margaret Effie
Residence: The Rectory Castle Frome Herefordshire
Age_at_death: 55
Officiating_Minister: J.W.J. Thackwell Vicar of Kempley with Oxenhall Gloucestershire
Event: Burial
Cause_of_death:
Memoranda:
Notes:
Register_Reference:
Page_No: 76
Parish_Chapel: Walford
Soundex: W363
So Emily was born abt 1906 wrt her Burial record, was Ernest working here then ?.
Whereas Ernest's death was in Balham, S.London, I wonder why there, family perhaps ?;
Record_ID: 1000356
Entry_Number: 674
Year: 1971
Month: May
Day: 26
Surname: WOODWARD
Forenames: Ernest John
Residence: 25 Melwood Road Balham
Age_at_death: 70

Event: Burial
Cause_of_death:
Memoranda:
Notes:
Register_Reference:

So Ernest was born abt 1901 wrt his Burial record, possibly in London ?.
(continued later)
---------------------
Using the excellent FreeBMD site can easily search Emily (with her many names)
FreeBMD gives her birth record;
Surname Given Name District Volume Page
Births Mar 1906
Adams Emily Margaret E. Pontefract 9c 130
from http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
So birth was registered in the "March" Quarter (ie Jan,Feb or March) of 1906, in the Pontefract Registration District, in the West Riding of Yorkshire;
see http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/pontefract.html
Newspaper refers to her father as "the late Mr. B. K. Adams, of Prestatyn, North Wales"
Using FreeBMD to list all "Adams" marriages between say 1870 and 1904, then visually scanning thro the list looking for a male with initials "B.K.", gave this possible choice, indeed the only one in the UK (on this site), family seem to be mobile so don't worry about the location for now;
Surname First name(s) District Vol Page
Marriages Dec 1901 (>99%)
ADAMS Bertram Keith Prestwich 8d 505
Griffiths Agnes Prestwich 8d 505
Hadfield Charles Prestwich 8d 505
WILLIAMSON Victoria Ethel Prestwich 8d 505
Prestwich district was in the North of Manchester, Lancashire, so across the Pennines from the West Riding, and not far from Prestatyn either;
See http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/prestwich.html
Searching FreeBMD's "births" this time, gave his full name and birthdate, which seems a good match. Again this is the only record on the database for this name, the great bonus of searching with second names/initials too !;
Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
Births Dec 1876 (>99%)
Adams Bertram Keith Poplar 1c 648
Poplar district is in the East End of London, just across the Thames from Balham, our Ernest's final home, maybe plausible.
I cannot find a Death Record for Bertram, perhaps FreeBMD lacks this area's data ?
Now try (belatedly!) searching them on the last available Census, 1911, from the excellent free-to-access "LDS" aka Familysearch website, https://familysearch.org/search/
which gives;
Name Emily Margaret Effie Adams
Event Type Census
Event Date 1911
County Cheshire
Parish Wilmslow
Sub-District Wilmslow
Registration District Bucklow
Gender Female
Age 5
Birthplace Johns Pontefract, Yorkshire
Record Type Household
Familysearch is free, but a bit cumbersome, have to search family members individually by using the "Adams" surname and "Wilmslow Cheshire" residence, so this may not be their complete household;
Name Stephen Keith Williamson Adams
Event Type Census
Event Date 1911
County Cheshire
Parish Wilmslow
Sub-District Wilmslow
Registration District Bucklow
Gender Male
Age 6
Birthplace Johns Pontefract, Yorkshire
Record Type Household
Name Frank Kingsley Clayton Adams
Event Type Census
Event Date 1911
County Cheshire
Parish Wilmslow
Sub-District Wilmslow
Registration District Bucklow
Gender Male
Age 1
Birthplace Johns Carleton Ph, Yorkshire
Record Type Household
Looks like Emily's brothers.
Name Bertram Keith Adams
Event Type Census
Event Date 1911
County Cheshire
Parish Wilmslow
Sub-District Wilmslow
Registration District Bucklow
Gender Male
Age 34
Birthplace London Bow, London
Record Type Household
So Emily's father, Mr B.K. Adams, was born in Bow, East London abt 1877; as per the earlier records.
Name Victoria Ethel Adams
Event Type Census
Event Date 1911
County Cheshire
Parish Wilmslow
Sub-District Wilmslow
Registration District Bucklow
Gender Female
Age 32
Birthplace Manchester Chestham, Lancashire
Record Type Household
From which can see she was Victoria Ethel WILLIAMSON wrt the Marriage Record above.
So born "Chestham", Manchester abt 1879. I think this should read Cheetham, in central Manchester.
---------------------
Searching Ernest John Woodward born abt 1901;
Births Dec 1897
Woodward Ernest John Witney 3a 913
Births Mar 1901
Woodward Ernest John Paddington 1a 33
Births Jun 1901
WOODWARD Ernest John Cannock 6b 545
Births Dec 1902
WOODWARD Ernest John Burton 6b 419
So he COULD have been born in Paddington, West London, near the GWR terminus etc, and not far from his final home, Balham.
???
Searching the 1911 Census using Familysearch gives quite a few near-matches, but only Ernest NOT Ernest John. None of their fathers have initials "K.B." as per the newspaper article.
???
Sorry, try again tomorrow !

Looking again for Ernest John Woodward born Paddington c1901 on the Familysearch site, I don't know why I didn't see this record last night as was focussing too much on the Census returns, it seems (to me) that this excellent f-o-c site has grown it's database since I used it last a few years back, this record is too recent to be available on the FreeBMD website.
Name Ernest John Woodward
Event Type Death Registration
Registration Quarter Oct-Nov-Dec
Registration Year 1984
Registration District Westminster
County London
Event Place Westminster, London, England
Birth Date (available after June quarter 1969) 06 Jan 1901
Volume 15
Page 1620
So this is a clear match for the Birth Record I found yesterday, but unfortunately does NOT match our 1971 Burial in Walford, so this Ernest can be discounted. Not surprisingly as I was mistakenly convinced there was another London link here, ah well.
------------
Familysearch also gives this Marriage Record, which is either
1. Incorrect, as the newspaper shows the actual Marriage took place at Boston, Lincs.
Or
2. Perhaps indicates they were living, so registered the marriage, in Ampthill in Bedfordshire ? This raises a recurring question for me, in the C20th century, was a Marriage registered "automatically" by the Minister, as I'd always assumed, or was it still down to the couple to register their own marriage in person, which presumably would wait until after the ceremony, honeymoon etc so at their place of residence. Any guidance would be appreciated, please, thanks... ??
Name Ernest John Woodward
Spouse's Name Emily Margaret Effie Adams
Event Date 1935
Event Place Ampthill, Bedford, England
Unfortunately altho Familysearch gives several possible hits for Ernest John Woodward in the 1911 and 1901 Census across England, so far I've not found him with his father with initials R.B., partly as this website does not make searching at all straightforward. It's also likely he was recorded as just Ernest, so opening-up many more possible households to check.
https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3A%22ern...
If anyone else can help probably with a subscription site I'd be grateful, please, altho' I do appreciate this is going outside of our usual area.
I also suspect that he may also have been a Minister, but so far simple Googling for "Rev E.J. Woodward" etc etc has produced nothing.

Which suggests they were definitely still in Glos when the first UK census was taken in 1841, so why no census results from Familysearch ?.
Try tweaking the search filters - golden rule may apply, "less = more", and it seems the family are living in Wales in 1841; perhaps Deborah returned home to be with her mother for the birth, altho this is pre GWR & Severn Bridge etc, so ?

They certainly moved about a lot! I don't believe Ernest followed his father's vocation, I believe he was an architect.
B.K. Adams was a railway engineer and died in a railway accident in Mauritius, which may explain the lack of death details?

They certainly did !, as did their Woodward ancestors I see, not unusual in Victorian times to find work, of course.
As a mechanical engineer myself I'm impressed by the Adams' technical background,in a time when such people were rightly respected, makes for an interesting FH story too. Unfortunately Familysearch etc don't seem to cover Mauritius (where oddly enough my Lincolnshire born step-niece now lives, small world !).
Do you know/need any more records for him ?
I guess you've seen what appears to be a Railway Magazine article about him ?
"Stephenson Locomotive Society, Journal 872 - November/December 2011,
p245 - Bertram Keith Adams"
http://www.stephensonloco.org.uk/SLS%20-%20Journal_previous.htm
I see Bertram was aged 34 when in London in 1911, so died after this...
Free-searching the BNA site gives some hits which I presume you know of, did he die in 1915 ?. I cannot give full details as have no subscription, but it seems he was an eminent engineer to be proud of;
" news was received at Wilmslow Monday of the sad death at Mauritius of Mr. B. K. Adams, chief engineer the Government ... "
Tuesday 6 April 1915 , Western Mail , South Glamorgan, Wales
and many other papers across the West and Midlands.

Also see these records about him

http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/images/9/99/Er18981021.pdf
And from the same magazine Index pages for spring 1898, we can see a reference to what I think? details him giving an address to Association of Civil Englneer Students at Manchester abt "Crossing the Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal by the Intercepting Sewer of the Bury Corporation".
http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/images/b/bb/Er1898v85Index.pdf
I wonder if Bertram was essentially a civil engineer, like Ernest, so concerned with the railway's "permanent way", the line itself, rather than the rolling stock which ran along it, altho in the 1900s there was less demarcation between civil & mechanical than there is nowadays.
