Hoorah, my turn to help you I hope, altho' you may-well have sussed it by now.

I agree, it's all rather clever, but yet ...

Anyhow, early days for this site me and it looks very promising.
If you click on "Basemaps" at top of R/H key, it then displays a set of mini maps from different eras; the era of the one currently being shown on the "main" screen has a pink highlighting border around it. Clicking on of the other mini maps will make that era's map display on the main screen.
Hope this makes sense to you.
