George Robinson 1828 (General)

by probinson @, S. Oxon, Thursday, January 12, 2017, 22:54 (2871 days ago)

I'm looking for the parents of, or any other information about, George Robinson, born 1828, married 1856 to Hannah Marina Drew at Ruxton Chapel, Marstow, Herefordshire. On the marriage certificate it shows his Father as Thomas but that's all I know about his parents. George variously claims to have been born in Taynton, Longhope and Mitcheldean on different census records. In 1851 he was a visitor (probably a lodger) in Lydbrook. The marriage certificate shows both he and Hannah residing at Hangerberry. I'm not able to find him in the 1841 census.

If anyone has any information I'd be happy to receive it.

Thanks

Hi,

The variations in quoted birthplaces makes sense to me.
I've known of Longhope as a placename since my youth in the 70s, yet was only a few years ago via this hobby & this website that I learnt of a smaller village nearby called Taynton. It seems logical that some census officials would maybe write "Longhope" if told someone was from "Taynton, near Longhope", for example. Similarly seems reasonable for a census official in Lydbrook to write Mitcheldean instead of, say, Longhope.

LDS aka FamilySearch website has this Baptism which looks a possible fit; admittedly a subtly different surname but worth considering, I'm told FamilySearch are renowned for transcription errors, and sometimes church ministers mishear ?.

Name George Robertson
Gender Male
Christening Date 21 May 1826
Christening Place TAYNTON,GLOUCESTER,ENGLAND
Father's Name Thomas Robertson
Mother's Name Amy

https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Ageorge...

HOWEVER, I now see (via Ancestry) that the original Parish Record for this Baptism does clearly state ROBERTSON, but the only George ROBERTson of this age/birthplace I can find living locally in 1841 & 1851 is in Gloucester with parents Samuel & Elizabeth, so maybe this IS our George's baptism record with an incorrect surname ?

My quick look on Ancestry and FamilySearch haven't found our George Robinson in 1841 either, just the later Census', but I'll keep looking. Disappointingly, my newfound access to the FindMyPast site isn't helping me at all, but that's probably me !

Back to FamilySearch, this time searching for Thomas & Amy in Taynton around 1825, gives this record which looks like a sister to George. Researching her may help build the full picture for George.

Name Selina Robertson
Gender Female
Christening Date 17 Aug 1823

I've searched for a Marriage for Thomas & Amy Robinson, and Robertson, within the FoD site PRs, and also on Ancestry and FamilySearch, sadly wothout success. Ditto the 1841 & 1851 Census.

?????

Re the Robinson OR Robertson name question, I think it worth noting that I cannot find ANY Marriage Records for a Selina ROBERTSON on FreeBMD site in Gloucestershire or Herefordshire, yet there are some for Selina ROBINSONs. Similarly there are far more marriage records for George ROBINSONs compared to just a few for Robertson, who seem far less numerous in our area.

This one seems a good fit for our Selina born 1827, note father Thos and witness Hannah Robinson, who MAY be her sister-in-law, George married Hannah Drew in 1856.

Their 1861 & 1881 Census records in Drybrook (so near Mitcheldean etc) gives this Selina's birthplace in abt 1825 as Aston Ingham & Longhope respectively, as per the above Baptism Record.

-----------

Ancestry has one public family tree for the same George Robinson that you're researching, is it your tree ?. This apears thoroughly detailed/researched, but also doesn't have his 1841 Census details, nor his Baptism or parents' names. It shows him in Lydbrook in all the Census' from 1851 thro to 1891. However in 1892 his wife Hannah dies, in 1901 Census he's in Leigh, Lancashire with his married daughter Marina Key, it doesnt give his death date. Obviously I'm not saying to rely totally on any public tree, errors do occur, but it may be helpful.

Thanks Jeff. I think you've found them. I've been struggling with this one for a couple of weeks and was going around in circles. Sometimes I think a problem needs a new pair of eyes on it.

I'll check through all the info over the next couple of days but it all looks to make sense.

The Ancestry tree you found wasn't mine. Mine's at http://person.ancestry.co.uk/tree/54239731/person/13720257559/facts

You're very welcome.

This is why I like the FamilySearch website, I often use it before I use Ancestry, as it gives quicker results and is more user-friendly than many of the "bigger" sites, especially as it automatically offers spelling variations. Ancestry's beginning to annoy me nowadays as it continues to gives umpteen "hits" for, say Marriages, when I've already found and saved into my trees the one that obviously matches my search criteria, whereas the suggestions so often clearly NOT relevant at all. Hence my disappointment when FindMyPast offered me so little ...
In fact to be honest I didn't realise the Baptisms I'd posted in my reply were Robertsons and not your Robinsons until some while after I'd cut & pasted them, hence lots of "rambling" backtracking in the rest of my post as I tried to convince myself I was on the right track, it was the Marriage for Selina that seemed to clinch it.

Ref the online tree I found, some of the birthplaces Selina appears to quote in the Census' look very odd eg Frampton-o-Severn, hence I "forgot" to mention those...
I'm sure you'll make sense of them all.

Hi again,
Out of curiosity I've just been looking at your online tree, and I was initially pleased to see your full name, as have often wondered what the P stood for. When at school in Berry Hill in the 70s I had a mate from that area who shared your name, and with my belief/guess that Robinson wasn't a particularly common name in the Forest, I wondered if you were the same gent, however clearly not as I recall he had Northumberland roots, ah well.

Anyway, moving on, I hope you don't mind but as an experiment I've been trying to assess how the FindMyPast site compares with Ancestry etc, and I thought I'd try and find your Hannah Marina Drew and maybe her parents Joseph Drew and Eleanor Niblett in the 1841 Census, a task I thought might be straightforward, however !..

Meanwhile, in the unlikely case it helps you, I did find these records which you haven't yet posted onto your tree.

From this site's PRs, image is now on Ancestry,

This suggests that witness John Niblett MAY be Eleanor's father's name. This suggests the following Baptism may be relevant, from this site's PRs albeit needed to use the Advanced Search for all Baptisms c1803 surname starting "Nib". Odd as I was expecting the Eleanor to have maybe become Helena etc as we often see in the Fod.

Hope this helps, does Hewelsfield seem possible, perhaps they travelled north from there up the Wye to reach Staunton ?.

Re my "trial" of the FMP site, I must say I'm disappointed so far, but early days yet....

---------------

PS ref the possible Hewelsfield link, I now see that by searching this forum for "Niblett Hewelsfield" there are a few prior threads linking Hewelsfield to the Staunton/Bicknor etc area, these may be worth your studying.

PPS And while Googling the above, I see this Ancestry Board post that appears to back-up my findings re Eleanor, and maybe some new living relatives for you to chat with ?

The Robinson/Robertson error is common. Just this morning I went to collect an order and said my name was Robinson and the guy behind the counter repeated it back to me as Robertson. I often find myself saying Rob-IN-son to people who get it wrong.
