Jayne. I live in Newent. Going back to ancient times, Newent was part of Wales, which then extended up to the Foreign Bridge at Gloucester.

It was always in Gloucestershire, but from early times was in the Diocese of Hereford. Gloucester east of the Severn then being in the Diocese of Worcester. Although it became part of Gloucester Diocese when that was formed in 1542, Newent and the Forest of Dean, remained under the Archdeacon of Hereford until 5Oct1836. Who did what at that time is not clear to me.

From 1836 Newent, was in Gloucestershire, in Gloucester Diocese, and under the Archdeacon of Gloucester.

Hope this helps, Martin Brown, President of Newent Local History Society.
