Shocking fatality in Dean Forest
James Jones, 62 years of age, labourer of Bill Hill, Lydbrook, was instantaneously killed whist at work at the Lydbrook Deep Level Colliery, West Dean (sic) . Deceased and other men were taking down an overhead wood bridge which had been used for carrying coals to the Severn and Wye and Severn Bridge railway. He had just sawn through, close to the ground, one of the eight inch baulks which supported the bridge, the timber being about fifteen feet in length, when it fell upon him, smashing his head to pieces
(Note Lydbrook is in East Dean)

P.R.O verdict:
Fracture of the skull, the result of a fall of a trestle which he was engaged in taking down. The deceased by his negligence largely contributed to his death
