Checking on the National Archives for James CONSTANCE Longhope

Gloucestershire Archives - holds many records (76 files)

Documents deposited by James CONSTABLE and Sons Ltd, saw mills and turnery works, LONGHOPE GL17 OLB

Administrative/biographical background :

The business is reputed to have been started by James CONSTANCE in a room of a house in Longhope, with the manufacture of carrels and coffins c.1720.

A frames' son Theophilus established proper in 1788, naming it after his father. The coming of the railway enabled the business to expand. From producing handles for agricultural implements locally, they began to provide every type of handle for the manufacturing trade in Sheffield and the business went from strength to strength.

It has been in the hands of the ALLAN family since c 1935 and it is still a going concern today involved, as a woodland owner, in coppicing; the old buildings form an industrial estate which the company lets as business units. (Information supplied by Mr C John ALLAN).
