Rowles Viney Hill (on the bend) (General)

by The Ferret, Tuesday, February 20, 2018, 14:12 (2471 days ago)

The house is on the left at a bend in the road, there used to be an old petrol pump also on the bend or close to it. I am related to the Rowles who lived there and remember visiting as kids back in the early 1960's, I remember an old Percy (my grand mothers brother) and a Sam. Any info would be very welcome. Thanks Alan

Hi Chris
Thanks, I would say a definite yes, didnt know he had a middle name. Just looking a little more and google earth shows the old pump is still there https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/1+The+Point,+Viney+Hill,+Lydney+GL15+4LZ/@51.758277...

The original house looks like it's either been knocked down and rebuilt or added to, there is what looks like a new build on the left side. I remember a pig sty there and path to orchard and a well at the top of the orchard/field rear of the old house. wonder if there are any relatives still there or what happened to them?

Alan

Hi Alan,
the Old Maps website carries detailed maps of Viney Hill thro' the 60s and 70s, perhaps they will help you as should show the landmarks you mention. Just enter "Viney Hill" in the site's search box, and the various maps will load which can be accessed via the left-hand menu list. I hope this helps, I don't know Viney Hill so am unfamilair with your precise house location.
J.

On the subject of old maps, if forum members are not already familiar with the National Library of Scotland's collection of freely available 6" Ordnance Survey maps (a collection which covers a wide time scale) this is the web site:- https://maps.nls.uk/os/6inch-england-and-wales/
Recommended as you can enlarge them and drag them around as you wish.

Another useful resource, again if the forum is not already familiar with it, is the Lloyd George Survey of Land Values 1909, Gloucestershire. The maps show individual hereditaments, and the search facility enables you to find out who owned the property and who occupied it:- https://www.glos1909survey.org.uk/
