COLLIER Family Walford nr Ross on Wye, early 1900s (General)

by Lesley, Tuesday, November 21, 2006, 08:26 (6578 days ago)

Is anyone related or doing any research on the above? They lived at Tump House, Walford, by the 1901 census and at least up to 1916. George and Florence Collier had two sons and two daughters - Stanley, Trevor, Annie and Edith. I am looking for any information or photographs, particularly on Edith, as I have recently seen some letters from her to someone I am researching. I think she may have married and become Wheeler?

Collier Family Walford nr Ross on Wye, early 1900s

I have a few Walford Records and have looked up the Collier Family in them.

Edith Collier was born 8 Apl 1902, and was Christened at Walford 11 May 1902 (Entry 671 Page 84). Her parents were George and Mary Florence Collier of Tump, Walford. George was a Woodman and the minister was Kentish Bache.

Edith, John Stanley and Richard Trevor are the three children of George and Mary Florence recorded in the Walford baptism register. This would include St John's Church at Howle Hill

Marion Annie (alleged d.o.b. 24 Mar 1898)was christend at Bishopswood 24 Apl 1898 Address given as Rose Cottage, Bulls Hill. Parents, George Smith and Mary Florence, he was a Woodman. Entry 719. No other records (b m or d) for Collier families at Bishopswood.

Walford MI
"In loving memory of / John Stanley / eldest son of George Smith / & Mary Florence Collier / died April 20 1931 / aged 31 years / Thy way not mine /
In loving memory of / Mary Florence Collier / dearly beloved wife of / George Smith Collier / who died Dec 6 1936 aged 68 / I know whom I have believed 2 Tim. 1.12 /
Also George her beloved husband/ who died May 7th 1956 aged 79 years."

Smith may be a clue to previous lineage.

There is another Collier family but they are from Deep Dene.

Hope this helps in some way.

Thanks for this information - the records don't show if Edith married a Wheeler I suppose? There is a memorial in the churchyard to an Edith Wheeler who would be the right age.

Collier Family Walford nr Ross on Wye, early 1900s

Yes Edith Collier married Bert Wheeler. I never knew what Bert was shortened from, he was always known as Bert. He worked at Walford Sawmills.
Edith's brother Trevor was the founder along with John Brain of the well known Drybrook Builders Collier and Brain.
Edith and Bert had three daughters Nancy, Marion and Pat, and one son Stanley.

Margaret

Thank you so much for the additional information about Edith Collier. I didn't know that about her brother Trevor either. I would guess Edith and Bert named their son Stanley after Edith's brother, who died young (aged 31) but not sure of the cause.

I wonder if any of Edith's children married and had children as if any of them is researching their family history I have seen these wonderful letters from her and from her brothers to their friend in the army and they sound such an interesting and lively family! There is also much mention of the sawmills (presumably how she met Bert) and other local goings-on in Walford.

Thanks again.

I think they all have children. Nancy the eldest married a Doctor, I don't know where she lives, Marion lives in the Forest, Pat lives in Gloucester and Stanley lives in Ross-on-Wye.

Hi Lesley
I'm one of Edith and Bert's nine grandchildren (Stan's son), and would love to see the letters if that is possible?
There were actually four sisters (Nancy, Marion, Dorothy, and Pat), and they all had children. Please let me know if you are still using this forum.
Thanks
Steve

Lesley,
Richard Trevor Collier born 1907 died in Dec 2000. I believe he was the Collier in Collier and Brain, builders and funeral directors, Drybrook.

He married a Dorothy Symonds in Ross in 1934. Their only child is still living. I can give you the name but not through this forum, email me if you want it. Brian
