Greyhound Inn, Mitcheldean (General)

by DaiJones, Thursday, November 30, 2006, 23:51 (6569 days ago)

My Great-Grandmother Mary Ann Meek (b1847) was a servant at the Greyhound Inn, High Street, Mitcheldean in 1871 census. It was run by Thomas & Emma Trotter ( nee Emma Smith ).

Emma died in July 1871 leaving Thomas with 5 children.

Thomas married to Mary Ann Meek in Jan 1874, and they had 2 children.

Thomas died in Apr 1876 and Mary Ann married Henry Palmer in May 1877.

Mary Ann & Henry moved to Rhondda Valley, Glamorgan, South Wales

Emma & Thomas's 5 children were left in Gloucestershire some with the Smith family.

1) Where did the Trotter family go

2) anyone have a photo of the Greyhound Inn

Here we have Kate and Thomas staying with their Uncle and Aunt

Agnes Mary Trotter abt 1876 Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, England Daughter Mitcheldean Gloucestershire
Fanny Trotter abt 1873 Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, England Daughter Mitcheldean Gloucestershire
John Birt Trotter abt 1833 Cinderford, Gloucestershire, England Head Mitcheldean Gloucestershire
Kate Trotter abt 1866 Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, England Niece Mitcheldean Gloucestershire
Martha Trotter abt 1871 Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, England Daughter Mitcheldean Gloucestershire

Tom Trotter abt 1863 Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire, England Nephew Mitcheldean Gloucestershire
Walter Rogers Hammond abt 1862 Leeds, Yorkshire, England Lodger (Head) (Lodger) Mitcheldean Gloucestershire

I've come across 2 Kate Trotters one born in 1866 and one born in 1867, the 1881 Census I've posted should be the right one as she is with her brother Tom. There is nothing to verify this is 'your' Kate on the 1891 so perhaps some care should be taken at the moment that she is the correct one.

Merrick Phelps was followed by Licencees Felix Josiah Wright and his wife Elizabeth. Thomas Timms took over 1943 approx. I think he was the last Landlord before it closed. The Greyhound was where the Post Office is now.

Would anyone happen to know if this was the same Thomas Timms who was born 1899 East Dean? He was the son of Thomas snr and Eliza Morse. I only ask because I have mislaid him!

Hi Slowhands

Thankyou for the above info (and the additional info sent offboard). I have also heard from Kim who states that the Greyhound Timms is indeed ours. He did marry a Nellie Cole, which fits in with the Frances N Cole marriage that you found. We would both appreciate it if you could dig out any details on the Cole side please. I am supposed to be doing my online tax return and have digressed (yet again!)

Cheers
Chris
