I am the grandson of Elsie Taylor and was delighted to find information about her family on the web site. I am going to visit Cinderford in September and am keen to know if there are archives that I can visit while I am there. Also happy to give further information on my grandmother.

Hi Bob,
welcome to this great website & forum, you're in the right place to research your family. I don't live there anymore but Cinderford is my hometown. Sadly it's declined somewhat since the busy thriving town it was a few years ago, however the people are still the salt of the earth !.
Have you any specific "archives" you wish to visit ?, what sort of thing are you hoping to find ?.
Have you explored this website fully, theres a weath of information here as well as the huge PRs database, such as old photos, documents, wills & inquests, etc.

Cinderford has the small but excellent public library which carries an extensive selection of Local History Books, and also the archives for the local newspaper that used to be called the Mercury but is now the Forester, please see this prior thread.

These archives are on microfilm and go back to the late 1800s, if it happened locally it would be in these papers !

An excellent relatively new way to access our other local newspapers is via the BNA website, see this thread.

I've not yet visited the official County Archives, these are housed in Gloucester 15 miles from Cinderford, but it seems they're readily accessible. Their website is listed in this thread.

A few miles from Cinderford is the main museum for the Forest, the Dean Heritage Centre, they do have archive material altho sadly they had a fire there a few years ago and some of their collection was destroyed. I would suggest it's an essential visit for anyone coming to the Forest to research their roots. This prior thread gives it's contact details.
