Mary Polly (Hawkins) King Whitlock (General)
by llangrove, Tuesday, January 02, 2007, 17:35 (6536 days ago)
I found an additional memorial inscription on the family gravestone for John and Eliza Hawkins, for Rachel King, d.Feb. 18, 1933, age 15. (Christchurch)
My problem is, I don't know to whom Rachel "belonged". John and Eliza had a daughter, Mary A. "Polly" b,1868. Mary first married Thomas(?) King and later George Thomas Whitlock in 1896. At age 50, I think she would have been too old to be Rachel's mother!
Would SKS PLEASE check the 1891 Census (probably West Dean) and see if Mary King age abt 23 is listed? I think Mr King died shortly after they were married, in 1889. Are there any children, listed with her, with the last name of King ?
As always...THANKS!

Good question! I got info from Christchurch Memorial Inscription list. I'm planning a trip to England and the Forest this Spring, hopefully I'll be able to see for myself!
You seem to be able to work wonders with that BMD Index! Would you mind very much looking for a year of death for.... Harriet Ann (Hawkins) Morgan b. 1848 Berry Hill area sometime AFTER Nov. 1909? I've never been able to find the date. Thanks!

I've rec'vd information that brothers, Walter annd Harry King were raised by Lydia (Hawkins 1873-1947) and her husband William Kilby (1870-1939). The brothers may be the sons of Lydia's sister, Mary "Polly" (Hawkins) King Whitlock. I think they all lived in West Dean area. Would SKS have a look 'round and see if they can come up with anything? I could find nothing in the parish records on this site. My guess is that my entire Hawkins Clan "defected" to Salem Chapel, as there are few records at Christchurch, for later years!
Please forgive me, remember I'm a Yank! The idea of an established Church is not familar to me. Am I correct in assuming that bmd's for non-conformists are not listed in C of E?
Thanks, and Happy New Year, to all!

There are those who believe that the Ministers of the Free churches looked after the Registers/records and they have been passed from Minister to Minister, so they may still be around but not in Public archives.
The BMD's are in fact Civil registration i.e. Birth, Marriage and Death( not strictly CoE). The legal requirements for civil registration have evolved over the last 170 years so this may explain why the earlier non-conformists seem to be missing from the BMD's.
Today "all" BMD events get a civil registration ( as far as I can recall !)
Just to confuse the Church/chapel records will record Baptism, Marriage and Burial - very subtle !!

Re: 1901 Census Berry Hill
For the record, Elizabeth Hawkins should be Eliza and Lily should be Lydia. All the info matches, what I know to be true!
Eliza became a widow in 1896. She would have been 62, when her daughter, Lydia married William Kilby, in 1904. It's not unlikely the entire family continued to live together.
Only three more years until the 1911 Census is released! This will have to wait, until then....
Thanks once again, "Slow". You're first class, all the way!
