Any Gypsy connections? (Urgent)
by Mac74, Saturday, January 28, 2023, 08:28 (663 days ago)
Hi All
After searching thru site i come across my Ancestors Tippins and what Family have told me their may of been a Romany connections thats what they said when the Tippins im related (Noah) visited family in South Wales on occasion is there any proof in this or just rumour?
I have the same question regarding other Family from Forest of Dean Surnames Saunders, Mason, Barnard, Baldwin ?
Did any of these families have Romany ancestry or maybe married into other Families from the Forest?
Any help tips or suggestions would be really appreciated
Great website by the Way!!
Many Thanks
Mac

by Mac74, Monday, January 30, 2023, 16:13 (661 days ago) @ slowhands
Hi all
No links with them families that i know if bit thanks for taking time out to post very interesting i never knew Roffe was a Gypsy surname
My ancestors are Thru Noah Mason Charlotte Agnes Saunders their lines seem to be connected to Zilla Chivers , a Barnard Baldwin Marriage and Bendingo Tippins not sure where Romany ancestry rumours are from if not thru The Male Side of Mason and Tippins im now wondering if its thru the women they married ? Saunders Chivers Ricketts and Barnard i think Barnards married into Smith and maybe a Dixon connection ?
Looks like ill have to research The site abit more????
Many thanks again

Well almost 10 years ago I did some research here, on Shadrach TIPPINS 1851 son of Abednego 1825
The biblical trio of names Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, would no doubt have been familiar to the enumerator, the spelling may have been a challenge ! and also may pose challenges to the modern transcriber.
A point here it was not uncommon for Traveller families to use “unusual” first names for their children – Shadrach, Neptune, Wisdom, Cinderella,Freedom for example

There is speculation that the Sweep was a sign of a travelling family ( as with Hawker, Grinder, tinker, peg maker etc) and maybe this is where your legend begins. However the family appears to live in or around the Scowles they are not travelling or having children elsewhere in England / Wales as we have seen in other families. It is possible that Richard had been in a travelling family and settled in Newland.
And of course there is a custom of Sweeps / good luck and leaping a broom at Weddings again believed to be associated with Gypsy tradition.

Abednego TIPPINS - Deja vu
by Mac74, Tuesday, January 31, 2023, 16:17 (660 days ago) @ slowhands
Hi there
Great find thankyou so much????
Thats what i was thinking they may of settled in Forest years back in researching both me Mum and Dads side it seems that many years ago quite a few families in Cotswolds and Forest of Dean maybe a combination of a welcoming population alot of agricultural work the area being rural etc it seems many worked in the Tin mines or Forest not all Gypsies travelled not all that travelled where Gypsies i found this marriage between a Barnard and Smith with a Baldwin as witnessbut again cant say if they were originally Gypsies i think you may be right being as first record of Romany in UK was about 1549 many families could of been on road hundred or so years and still settled in 1600 1700s
Thanks so much for everyones replies on my topic so far
Really appreciated

Mornin All
Its lookin to me like an old wives tale regards Romany connection?? Cant see anything to suggest it funny tho cos my lot were sure they were judging by the atories and the fact like stated on court and gaol records they all seemed tohave black hair brown eyes brown skin maybe it was all the time up them chimneys!
Kind regards
Mac
