Hi

I have Elizabeth Blanch b c 1801/1803 in my tree. She married Richard Powell in 1823 at Newland. Their daughter Maria married Henry Frowen.

I am having trouble locating Elizabeth's family- On the census her birthplace is listed as Yarmouth-

1861 - RG 9 1755 101 3 still at East Dean although birth as c1795, birthplace transcribed as Monmouth but image says Yarmouth.
Name Age
Elizabeth Powell 66
Richard Powell 66

1851 HO107 1959 224 21 at East Dean
Name Age
Elizabeth Powell 48 Yarmouth
George Powell 6
John Powell 14
Richard Powell 50
Richard Powell 25

1841 - HO107 20 18 15
Elizabeth is listed as born in county here.

I have tried to find a possible family for Elizabeth in Glous and Norfolk to no avail. Slowhands kindly gave me an entry from baptisms for Elizabeth Blanch b 1798 to John and Sarah at Newland, but couldn't be sure it is her. However I did find an Edward Blanch on the 1871 census, born Yarmouth c 1788(transcribed as Garmouth)but image does say Yarmouth, living in Newland - RG10 5298 58 3, and I was hopeful he may be a brother for my Elizabeth. BUT, to make matters even worse, on previous census Edward lists his birthplace as London-
1861 - RG9 3980 67 19 at Newland
1851 - HO107 2444 105 42 at Newland
1841 - HO107 20 20 15

Can anyone understand what is going on here? It's driving me batty!!
Does anyone else have the Blanch's in their tree?

Thanks

and I'll probably get slapped down for even muttering " Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight (Hampshire)", let alone Yanworth in glorious Gloucestershire.

However I'm inclined to settle on an East London family ( Bethnal Green / Shoreditch/ Bow / Hackney) settling in the Forest in 1810- 1820 perhaps. The 1871 entry looks very confused, now given the ages of Edward and Sarah, its possible that Edward was mis heard by the Census collector, who recorded "something" in his notes, then when the Census book proper was written up it became Yarmouth, and then Norfolk was added in. Now what was recorded ?

In 1851 there is a Susan Blanch living next door, from London another clue perhaps?

Ooh thanks for that slowhands-

I was trying to avoud the Isle of Wight one!! lol and I'd never heard of Yanmouth!

I have noticed a baptism on the igi for Sarah Blanch in 1796 in Great Yarmouth to Thomas and Susanna Blanch- This is the only one I can find there at that time. I wonder if the Blanch's have moved up from London area passing through Yarmouth for some reason, and had some children there on the way- Maybe the Susan you found next door to Edward is the mother of him and my Elizabeth? It's funny that both Edward and Elizabeth have Yarmouth mentioned at some point on the census.
Maybe if I can get a copy of the baptism for Sarah in Yarmouth it may give a clue.

What do you think?

Thanks

Blanch family- opinions please

by Simone @, Tuesday, January 09, 2007, 10:10 (6529 days ago) @ Simone

Hi again

There is a Charlotte Kear with Edward and Sarah in 1871. I have just found a marriage on the IGI for Edward Blanch to Sarah Kear at Newland 30/4/1821.

Doesn't help me with Yramouth connection but maybe someone else knows something more about Edward and Sarh that may give a clue.

I'm beginning to wonder if the Blanch's were born in the Forest but travelled a bit.

Thanks
