by faymaree, Tuesday, January 16, 2007, 18:54 (6522 days ago)

Thomas Symonds was a witness to My 2xg grandfather and grandmothers marriage in Dymock in 1848. Does anyone have anyone by this name in their family tree who might fit the time and place, as I am trying to trace more of my gg grandfathers background.

Amazing what a quick response!
Do you have details of Eliza Tylers parent names?
I think she was born in Ledbury.

Hi,
what is Eliza's age/birthdate according to the 1841 Census ?.

I ask as according to the 1851 (see post above) she was born Hillsley, Glos abt 1823, however I suspect the 1841 differs slightly.
I presume it doesn't give any clues wrt her parents, presumably she's left home and is working ?.

The only Hillsley I know is some way from Ledbury, t'toher side of Gloucestershire across the Severn and south of Stroud towards Swindon !.

??

Thanks.
--------------------

PS Using this site's 1841 Census search I'm not sure but I THINK there's only one TYLER household in Dymock, namely:

1841 Census Search Results

Surname First Name Age Place Box Piece Folio

TYLER Elizabeth 17 DYMOCK 1 350/6 34 (so born abt 1824)
TYLER Hannah 9 DYMOCK 1 350/6 34
TYLER Harriet 2 DYMOCK 1 350/6 34
TYLER Maria 6 DYMOCK 1 350/6 34
TYLER Mary 13 DYMOCK 1 350/6 34
TYLER Samuel 50 DYMOCK 1 350/6 34
TYLER Sarah 40 DYMOCK 1 350/6 34

Which SUGGESTS Eliza's parents are Samuel(b1791) & Sarah (b1801) ??

Ummm, that was unexpected !?

Please can you advise if she is with her family during the 1841 Census, I presume not ?.
As you can see from my "PS" on the above post it seems she is NOT the Eliza I found in 1841 Dymock, as you probably know Elizabeth/Eliza was a VERY popular name then !. Sadly I don't have full Census access to hand, sorry.

by birks @, Saturday, August 10, 2013, 00:13 (4125 days ago) @ Jefff

Confusing.
There are a few Symonds in Dymock!

The 1841 Census reads
Thomas Symonds age 30 born 1811
Eliza Symonds age 25 born 1816
John Symonds age 9 born 1832
Mary Symonds age 6 born 1835
Charles Symonds age 4 born 1837
Emma Symonds 1 born 1841.

Following the census records it seems Thomas and Eliza lived in Dymock forever! Well until the 1890s at least.
I have found a death record Eliza Symonds who died 1892 , Dymock Newent.

Yes it is confusing, and then you also need to consider the Symmons, Simmons, Simmonds etc etc...
Tick the Soundex box when you search and it REALLY gets scary ;-)
But don't worry this is the sort of challenge this forum "enjoys".

Thanks.

I think that there is a different family who marry pre 1833
This one is Thomas/Eliza the other is Thomas/Elizabeth compare the 1861 census for both(!)

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Saturday, August 10, 2013, 00:17 (4125 days ago) @ slowhands

Hi Slowhands,
this one's too tricky for me to work out , so I'm going to duck out for a while !

In case you haven't noticed there is a Ledbury Baptism in the PRs which "fits";

Record_ID: 293031
Entry_Number: 348
Year: 1816
Month: Jan
Day: 20
Parents_Surname: TYLER
Child_Forenames: Elizabeth
Fathers_Forenames: William
Mothers_Forenames: Sarah
Mothers_Surname:
Residence: Parkway
Occupation: Carpenter
Officiating_Minister: Ja[me]s Watts
Event: Baptism
Memoranda: Daughter of
Notes:
Register_Reference: B092/8
Page_Number: 44
Parish_Chapel: Ledbury
Soundex: T460

Hope this helps, but of course feel free to ignore it :-)

ps PLEASE, at some convenient point can you advise whether I'm correct in my interpetation of this site's Census data, as per my earlier post. Many thanks and Happy Hunting !

Thomas and Eliza SYMONDS Bromsberrow Heath

by birks @, Saturday, August 10, 2013, 00:59 (4125 days ago) @ Jefff

Thank you.
That baptism seems to match the with her birth date and place of Birth on later census
Super sleuthing there!

Are there any parish marriage records for William and Sarah Tyler?, I can only go back to 1837 on the BMD search.

Eliza TYLER b1816, Ledbury area

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Saturday, August 10, 2013, 01:30 (4125 days ago) @ birks

Hi again,
Assuming this IS the correct family (Slowhands is a far better sleuth than I am, I just search the PRs on this site's database), then if we use the very useful "advanced search" facility at bottom of the PR Search page we can find these Baptisms for our couple:
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=page&id=2

Record ID Year Parents Surname Child Forenames Fathers Forenames Mothers Forenames Mothers Surname Residence Occupation Parish Chapel

376289 1811 TYLER John, William & Sarah, Ledbury
292804 1814 TYLER Sarah, William & Sarah, Parkway, Labourer Ledbury
293031 1816 TYLER Elizabeth, William & Sarah, Parkway, Carpenter Ledbury
293254 1818 TYLER Hannah, William & Sarah, Parkway, Labourer Ledbury
293697 1822 TYLER Joseph, William & Sarah, Parkway, Labourer Ledbury
293981 1824 TYLER Esther, William & Sarah, Parkway, Carpenter Ledbury

Which suggests any marriage would be around 1810 or earlier ?

Now again use "advanced search" but for Marriages,
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=page&id=22

Search for ALL Marriages between "William T" and "Sara", so finding all with a "T" in the surname to allow for spelling variations. Of the 400+ results can re-sort them chronologically by clicking the column header, and then browse thro quickly to find what seems the most obvious hit, namely:

In case you don't know the area Aston Ingham is only a few miles from Newent, a little further north to Ledbury.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HEF/AstonIngham/Gaz1868.html

ASSUMING ??? the groom is from Aston Ingham, and not from one of several adjoining parishes (it's a common name locally), this SEEMS like a possible hit:

Record_ID: 277178
Entry_Number: 458
Year: 1781

Day: 7
Parents_Surname: TYLER
Child_Forenames: William
Fathers_Forenames: Joseph

Memoranda: Son of born Feb 11
Notes: Any abbreviated forenames have been expanded to the full name
Register_Reference: AR90/2
Page_Number: 30
Parish_Chapel: Aston Ingham
Soundex: T460

Searching the less common bride's name in the Database gives this probable Baptism:

Record_ID: 277225
Entry_Number: 505
Year: 1785
Month: Jul
Day: 24
Parents_Surname: FLUCK
Child_Forenames: Sarah
Fathers_Forenames: James

Event: Baptism
Memoranda: Daughter of
Notes:
Register_Reference: AR90/2
Page_Number: 32
Parish_Chapel: Aston Ingham
Soundex: F420

So she was abt 21 when marrying, a good fit.

I'm off now, don't know where in the world you are but its 1.30am in the UK, time for a beer and catchup on the cricket "high"lights... Suggest you keep plugging away searching the database, it's very easy once you get the hang of it. Any problems we'll try and help tommorrow.

Goodnight & happy hunting, Jeff
