I know to us the fact that he is lodging there would mean that he does not belong to the family but would it have been the same then?

I have seen Son, Nephew, Grandson, Adopted Son, and possibly a few others but as the relationship to the Head of family gets more complex I suspect Lodger was OK for the Enumerator !
