William Edwin Green Freeman (General)

by lynda_gilbey, Sunday, February 04, 2007, 23:59 (6503 days ago)

Can anybody advise me. This person is my great great grandfather. His father acordingly was Edwin Thomas Freeman. I have baptisim records stating this as true when William Edwin Green Freeman was babtised in 1903 aged then 16/17. I cannot find birth documents stating the same.

According to my Uncle he recalls William stating he was brought up in the forest by his grandparents. This i cannot confirm as i cant locate him on any census. Edwin his father seems to elaborate and obmit truths. He states he was in the Welch regient serving abroad from 1883 until 1891 (thus he couldnt be around to sire WIlliam).

Edwin joined the Work house staff on leaving the forces. His first appointment was 1894, but according to his job application it states during the time of 1883 to 1894 he was a labourer at Trafalgar mine and a Gardener for a Mr T fletcher of Upper Lydbrook. He also states he has no children at this time but is married to a Ellen (known later as Fannie).

In 1896 he changes the work house of employment, but on this application he states he was in the 11th regiment for 12 years (or 12 years ago- depending on how you want to read this statement). He also states he has a son 9 years old but living in Pershore.

The following job application 1897 again states he has no son which he sticks to for the next 4 years on following job applications. Then in 1901 he again states he has this child. What a dilema. I cant find any information to confirm William Edwin Green is Edwins son or whom is his mother. likewise i cant locate a marriage for Ellen and William (ellen states in one of her applications that she came from Botley).

If anyone has knowledge of Edwin or William or can suggest an alternative method to confirm my records I would appreciate it.

Yes i thought this was the correct person and sent for the certificate. I cant find his mother named in any census after this date to locate her whereabouts. No father is mentioned on this birth cert so i cant rule it out. i know williams birthday was the 3 November and presume if is his birth records he wasnt registered until Jan of the following year. I thought maybe E. Green may have died soon after child birth but cant find her death records. The other problem is i cant find William in any census after either. Any other advise would be appreciated. Thanks Lynda

I assume that E. Green is named as the mother. Have you narrowed a suspect E(liza ?)/ E(llen()Green down in Census data prior to 1888 ?

Thanks slow hands for all your info but reaserch has led me to belieVe that this william edwin green is not my william edwin green freemans birth certificate. I have baptism records that state his birth date to be NOV 1886 also a news paper editorial states the sAmE. Unfortunately i still cant locate his birth details so i cannot confirm his parents...I cant even find Edwin Thomas Freemans marriage to a Ellen or Fannie prior or after williams birth..... i am at a total loss as to where to go next in proving my great grandfathers parents... Accordingly the babtism cert is only as true as the information that was given to the vicar and William obvious wanted people to beleive these people were his biological parents (even though i have documentation that states Edwin was not around at the time of conception)
ANY ADVICE WOULD BE APPRECIATED

Ellen Green 1867?

"oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practise to deceive"!

Could this be his Mummy?

Ellen said she came from Botley.
Winchester covers the Botley area.

On FreeBMD:

Possible on FreeBMD for William:

They could have added the extra names at the baptism?

Chris
Thanks... I will look into the Ellen as i do not know when she was born. However i cant locate her marriage to Edwin Thomas FREEMAN. As for William Edwin GREEN Freeman, he was definately born in 1886 acording to his babtism records and age of death on his death records. where did you get the idea of Aston. His babtism records were at Shirley in 190? (sorry havent got the records handy), but at the same time his parents were work house master and Matron in the area. SO many documents all contradicting each others facts ..lAAAAAAAAAAAAr
