Joseph BEACH, Whitecliff - Newspaper inquest report 1871 (General)

by rheola, Friday, February 09, 2007, 10:00 (6498 days ago)

Hi , I have recently found out that my 2xgreatgrandfather Joseph Beach of Whitecliff died from a rather horrific suicide !! I have digital copy of inquest but it's largely illegible . The forester newsopaper say they weren't in print in Feb 1871 . Please does anyone know what newspaper was in print in the area for that period,as it probably would have been written about. Also does anyone have any info on the Beach family from Coleford area ? regards Carol Harris

by May @, Friday, February 09, 2007, 23:47 (6498 days ago) @ rheola

Hi,

This is from some records I transcribed a while ago (it's an ongoing project) which I hope it is of interest to you. The name, date and place look right, but a suicide in buried by the C of E Minister in Consecrated Ground ?

Joseph BEACH, Haulier, age 47, of Whitecliff near Coleford, was buried in Coleford Cemetery, South Division Adults Graves, (Grave B2), in Consecrated Ground, on 15 Feb 1871.
The minister was T Holbrow.

Joseph BEACH, Whitecliff - Newspaper inquest report 1871

Hi May, thanks for the info on Joseph Beach(suicide) it is him , the dates are correct . I WAS wondering where he would have been buried, but it's a surprise it was in consecrated ground ! He actually died from cutting his own throat with a claspknife !This he did just days after the birth of a new baby and with the family present . I can't imagine his state of mind . While I'm hear , does anyone know what 'tin eyes' or tin fever is ? Thanks again

Tin fever would be a little like Gold fever , as in Gold rush, to a potential source of Tin Ore, or...

a fever from Tin poisoning.

Tin eyes is probably a description of the result of Tin irratation / poisoning, from tin dust at a guess ( like conjunctivitus ?).

There was a tin plate works in Coleford, later became the Brickworks, and at Redbrook ( just down the hill from Whitecliff)

You are correct in the assumption about tin poisoning it causes severe irrritation of the eyes and skin also head and stomach aches,in the long term it can lead to severe mental problems the same as lead poisoning.
