Jeremiah NASH, 1891 & 1901 (General)

by Matt Nash, Saturday, February 10, 2007, 19:29 (6497 days ago)

Can anyone please help me with census data on the family of Jeremiah and Charlotte Nash in 1891? Also Jeremiah (only) in 1901?

BACKGROUND: My GG-grandparents, collier Jeremiah Nash (born 1844) and Charlotte (Miles) Nash (born 1849), and their children (Samuel, Thomas, Henry, George, Sarah, and Daniel), were living in Westbury On Severn during the 1881 census. I believe that they all were living in or around Cinderford or Ruspidge at the time of the 1891 wedding of my G-grandparents Thomas Nash and Sarah Jane Cooksey, but I’m not certain.

Jeremiah may not be listed along with Charlotte in 1891 as he left the family at some point. The family immigrated to America during the 1890s, leaving only Jeremiah and son George behind. Jeremiah passed away in 1904 at Union Workhouse, Chepstow, Monmouthshire.

Thanks for your help!

This is very helpful, Slowhands. Thank you very much!

Does the family not appear in the 1891 census? I know that son Thomas Nash married Sarah Jane Cooksey in May 1891 and was listed as a resident of East Dean. I suppose that it's possible that they all moved out of the Forest shortly thereafter.

Wow! What fantastic detective work! No wonder why we haven't been able to find the family in the 1891 census. (A group of us have established a "Nashes of the Forest of Dean" family history forum on Yahoo groups at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nash_fod/ .) I guess Jeremiah must have left the family by 1891.

Thank you SO much for going the extra mile and helping us fill in this piece of the puzzle, Slowhands! You are the best!!!

Hi

Jeremiah does appear to have gone "walk about" by 1891, the 1901 entry in Chepstow Workhouse "may" be him ( or it may not ). There is a true Jeremiah Welsh of Chepstow who shows from 1861 - 1891, but of apparent different age.

Charlotte is recorded as Wife / married but I could not see Jeremiah ( i will go back and recheck the image) there is no "Head" to the household - save James Harris which leads to the index error. My reading is that Charlotte has taken rooms in the James Harris house.

Charlotte and family moved further west. In 1900, she lived in Montana.

She later moved to Fernie, British Columbia, then to Pincher Creek, Alberta

NASH freeminers Sling/Ellwood/Coleford

by Matt Nash, Wednesday, February 14, 2007, 08:26 (6493 days ago) @ slowhands

Thank you very much for your help once again, Slowhands!

Yes, William (aged 32 in 1838) was indeed the father of Jeremiah (and therefore my ggg-grandfather). John (aged 63) was my gggg-grandfather; Richard (aged 60) was his brother. The others in 1838 are their sons. John and Richard had brothers Samuel and Thomas. We're not yet certain of their parents--Richard Nash (c1746) and Mary Harrison (c1749), married 28-Sep-1767 Newland, seem to be the leading contenders among the three couples we have identified.

By the way, I just received word from another descendent of Jeremiah Nash that he had left the family in pursuit of odd jobs around the country and often sent money back to the family. (Had the mines hit upon hard times in the 1880s & 1890s???) In a letter to his son George shortly before his death, Jeremiah explained, "You may think I had a heart of stone but loved you all very very much."

Interestingly, we have descendents of all of these registered Nash freeminers on our "Nashes of the Forest of Dean" Yahoo group, except for Reuben and Francis Nash.

Isn't the power of modern technology wonderful? Who could have guessed 50 years ago that a family could reunite via the internet? Thank you to all who have reached out to connect!!!
