Thanks for taking the time to look up all this information! I, too, thought that a William and Elizabeth could possibly be the parents of James. Will investigate your info further. Was also searching for any British/Welsh distant relatives who may wander onto this forum. This Rudge family certainly ranged far & wide from their Forest Of Dean beginnings--to the states of Victoria & South Australia, Pennsylvania, Idaho, and California. Would gladly share info if you are intersted.
Much appreciated,
Kim
William RUDGE who married Mary MERRICK of Marstow

I am a direct descendent of William Rudge who married Mary Merrick of Marstow (Herefordshire), in Marstow, on 26th October 1819. The Marstow Parish Register shows William to be a husbandman from Goodrich (next parish to Marstow) but I can find nothing in Goodrich records.
He was buried at Marstow in 1846 aged 53 years, so DoB would have been c.1793.
Although nothing in Goodrich, English Bicknor (just across the River Wye!) records a William being baptised 13th February 1792. He is the son of another William, and Elizabeth. They had been married at English Bicknor on 15th December 1788. She was formerly Elizabeth Mathews.
I'm tempted to think I'm on the right lines as Marstow records also show a Thomas Rudge, a sawyer, son of a James Rudge, a labourer, marrying Susan Macklin in 1842. That has been the subject of another posting exchange. If Thomas was married in 1842 my guess would be that he was born about 1815/1820. A similar guess would mean that James (his father)would have been born about 1790/95. And William and Elizabeth of English Bicknor did indeed have a son James baptised 2nd February 1794.
So perhaps James and my Great, Great, Great Grandfather were brothers and James joined William across the Wye in Marstow.
Can anyone confirm any of that and if possible, help me with the rest of the family tree please.
Thanks
Steve R
