Anybody have any prior references to an entry in the 1881 census for Ellen Thorne age 24 in earlier census records? Cannot yet find any birth/baptism references on this site. Thank you for any leads.

Joseph Thorn(e) - Born circa 1796

by hfeldon1 @, Saturday, February 25, 2012, 21:20 (4656 days ago) @ slowhands

Hi, I am looking for the record of the baptism of a Joseph Thorn who was a 'Mason' and shown with his wife, Hannah, and their family in Blakeney/Awre in the 1841-1861 censuses. The census records show his place of birth as Awre but his baptism does not appear on this site's parish records; although there are a number of other Thorn(e)'s baptised in Awre. Joseph's Will is in the records and it confirms he died in 1863. I believe he is the Joseph Thorne that married a Hannah Jobbins in St Mary De Lode Church, Gloucester.

The details of his baptism will give me his parents and my search can then continue! Any help will be much appreciated.

A Joseph THORN is in Awre - 7 June 1818, as he was a witness to the wedding of Fanny BAGGERT to John KEARE. Looking at the advance search for children of John KEAR and Fanny: John appears to be bricklayer, tiler, plasterer, (and Stone Mason, on later census returns) - so probably worked with Joseph and appears to be about the same age.

On the 1841 census Hannah says she was - not born in County

---

Christopher THORN & Anne (nee JAMES) married in Hewlesfield, 31 July 1777 - seem to have children born in a few places including Awre.

One child - James THORN 1795 - is also a Mason on the 1841 census and a plasterer in later census - so it seems to be a family profession.

Thank you for the information.

I had identified Christopher and Ann as possible parents, particularly as Joseph had a son called Christopher, but the lack of a baptism record means I cannt be sure.

However, with your help the 'circumstantial' evidence is strong.

I believe his wife, Hannah, was the Hannah Jobbins who was baptised in Sherston Magna, Wiltshire (near Malmesbury), the daughter of a John Jobbins. She puts her place of birth as 'Shirston, Wilts, in the 1871 census.

If anyone has details of/access to the banns for the marriage of Joseph Thorne and Hannah Jobbins in St Mary De Lode Church, they might provide further information.

For information, I am descended from Joseph's son, George, who married an Eliza Harding (in the Forest) and went to live in Pontypool.

Again, many thanks.

H.

Some time ago I posted about my 3x gt grandfather Joseph Thorne ('Mason') of Blakeney and the lack of a christening record for him. Helpful replies failed to find such a record but prompted a visit by me to the excellent archives and family history centres in Gloucester. There I found the Will of an Ann Thorn (nee James) which clearly identifies as Joseph as one of her sons. Ann was married to Cheristopher Thorn.

Now I am looking to go back further and have found some parish register entries which point the way but are bit inconclusive.

However, I am very interested in the reference in Ann's Will to a piece of land in Tidenham called 'Lumpland', which she bequeathed to her sons James and Joseph in equal shares.

Also, from other archives records, I have established that Joseph's share (or part thereof)was sold (by his grandson)in 1879 to The Wye Valley Railway. I also noted that OS maps show a 'James Thorn Wood' in Tidenham.

Can anyone please help me to find any history about this part of Tidenham parish and the lands referred to, which may be the key to finding which Thorns lived there and are Joseph's descendants.

All or any comments would be welcome!

What a great placename !

First, I guess from your post you've seen this Will, from TNA site:

Contents:

(2) The Wye Valley Railway Company
Moiety of freehold land (32 perches), part of a close called Lumpland in Tidenham. Plan endorsed
Consideration: £25
Witnesses: A. MORGAN, sol. Pontypool; F.J. EVANS his clerk

I suspect these general Tidenham sites are all known to you, but maybe worth followingup offline ?

http://www.tidenhamparishcouncil.co.uk/history.html

http://www.tidenhamhistory.co.uk/index.html

Unfortunately the ever-reliable British History site contains no references to Lumpland or Thorn that I can find:
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=15758&strquery=lumpland

I would have suggested the Old Maps site to study the old OS Maps but you've done that with some success, so....???

Hope this helps a little, I'll try again later when time permits.

Jeff,

Thanks for the leads. I will take a look. Have sent for some earlier Wills that may help too.

You are right - a great name for a place - you would think it would help in a search!

Hi,

Just going through some of the deeds belonging to my parents' house. Joseph and Hannah Thorn lived here (think they were the first - it was known as Thorn Cottage then) from 1833. Would you like some photos of the house?
