Hi I have James Beach as my 3x greatgrandfather , he was born c1798 in Newland /Coleford , he married a Silvie Williams. I thought (wrong , as it happens ) that his parents were Thomas Beach and Mary Priest . The ages aren't right , then I found Thomas born 11/9/1773 Newland ,parents James Beach and Elizabeth Hughes . This Thomas married Mary Kear in 31/8/1797 . PLEASE does anyone have these people in their tree or know anything about them , I don't really want to go 'barking up the wrong tree !' Any info would be much appreciated regards , a more confused than ever rheola

Hi

The area of Newland didn't mean just Newland itself - I guess it is kind of a district name aswell - for want of a better way of explaining it (which for some reason doesn't come to mind at the mo!)

On the IGI there is a baptism in NEWLAND for James Beach 28 Jun 1798 to Thomas Beach and Mary and there is also a baptism in the parish records on this site in BREAM for James Beach 28 Jun 1798 to Thomas Beach and Mary of Forest. I think these are one and the same baptisms.

Right I think I may have worked it out.

From the IGI - Thomas Beach m. Mary Priest 20 Jun 1771 Newland.
From the parish records on this site(Their son?) - Thomas Beach bap. Bream 11 Jul 1773 to Thomas Beach and Mary.
From the IGI - Thomas Beach (bap. 11 Jul 1773 Bream) m. Mary Kear 31 Aug 1797 Newland.
next comes the baptism I have listed for James at the top of this post which I think is this Thomas and Mary's son.

So James is the son of Thomas Beach and Mary Kear , and this Thomas is the son of Thomas Beach and Mary Priest. Of course you will need to check this all out but it sounds viable don't you think?

Jo.

I have seen Bream described - "Chapelry of Bream in the parish of Newland" on the older Registers.

Coleford was described in similar fashion.

Go back to the Homepage, then
On the Stories and Articles page , there is a Parish Boundaries entry, on there you will find a sketch of the parish boundaries.

Newland is in several parts that goes around West Dean....

Thanks very much for the info , it's much appreciated and makes perfect sense ! There seems to be a large Beach 'family' in the area . I'll definately look into this now . regards rheola
