Phillip Gunter b.1776 at Little Birch, Herefordshire, journeyman/stonemason married to Mary nee Tylor b.1779 at Little Birch on 24th April 1800 at Little Birch. They are my 3x great grandparents. I am trying to find any link or ancestors of Phillip to be able to trace further back. The Parish records for Little/Much Birch did not show him. It is possible that they were Roman Catholic as their youngest son, William and his family were. Thank you.

My great grandfather James Gunter is recorded as having been born in Birch (don't know whether Little or Much) in 1863. From your research would you know if he is in anyway related to the Phillip Gunter born in Littler Birch in 1776? For such a small village at that time I would guess there should be some connection.
I wopuld be very pleased to hear from you.
Kind regards
Jim Gunter

I have a record of 12 children of Philip Gunter & Mary Tylor. They had a son James born 23 Jan 1823(11th child), so I suppose he could be the father of your James? I'm sorry I don't know any more, as my interest here lies further back from Philip and Mary.
My great grandmother Elizabeth Gunter was a granddaughter of Philip and Mary and she married Joseph Amer and moved to Yorkshire in the mid 1850's where my research continued for the 1860's.
I can give you details of the other 11 children if that will help. As far as I can tell, Elizabeth only had one sister Ann.
Regards
Joan Gibbs

Hi,
Philip Gunter was my greatx3 grandfather. My gretax2 grandfather was William Gunter who married Marie Agnes Merry although i am not sure where. Their daughter Teresa, my great grandmother, was born in Goodrich in 1861.
I would be interested in any further info above Philip Gunter. There is a famous Catholic family in Abergavenny who held masses at their mansion during the catholic repressions. I am a catholic and wonder if there is any tenuous link!!!!

Hello
My great grandmother was Maria b.1854, sister of Teresa. I have only just caught up and re-registered onto this site. I have realised that there has been quite a few threads re the Gunters ! William Gunter b.1825 married Maria Agnes Merry on 26th April 1847 at Monmouth. Their grave is in Goodrich Parish Church in the Catholic burial section. I am still hoping for a breakthrough with Phillip's parents.
I do have Merry info as accessed the Parish Register for Welsh Bicknor online.
Maria Gunter b.1854 married Thomas Manning at the RC Chapel at Courtfield House, Welsh Bicknor in 1880.

Many thanks for the full details. Looks like I have a lot of leads to follow up. Excellent.

My first cousin three times removed (!!!) was called Maria Rook (born 31/5/1852 or 1853) married John Tyler (born 1849) on 24th January 1870. They were RC and the witnesses at their wedding were Henry and Ann Gunter. Maria and John lived at Coalway, Lane End, Coleford in 1881 and his occupation is listed as coal miner. They had four children, Rosa born (1874); John (born 1876); Thomas (born 1878) and Teresa (born 1880). Rosa was born in West Dean, Gloucestershire, but I don't know where the others were born. I can find no record of any of them after the 1881 census. Does anyone know what happened to any of them and who they married?

I don't know if this is any help but a Henry Gunter and Thomas Tyler were both witnesses at the wedding of James Thompson and Elizabeth Shellard on 18th of March in 1960, this sounds a bit early for your Thomas. James and Elizabeth were both from Lane End, West Dean Gloucester. They were not RC and were married at St Paul's Church.
Interestingly Henry Gunter was also the witness of another marriage on the same page, on the 2nd of February also at St Paul's Church, maybe he was some sort of employee who they used as a witness. Just an idea.

Interesting Henry Gunter and his wife Ann Gunter were witnesses at the marriage of my ggggrandfather Thomas Probert and Elizabeth Tyler who were living in Coalway Lane End. Elizabeth, who was age 22 in 1866 when she got married, had a father called James Tyler.

I am linked to Phillip via his daughter Harriet born 1819. Harriet married William Poyner in 1843. They had 7 children variously born in Llanwarne, Llandinabo and Kingstone Herefordshire. She died in 1900 at Mill Common, Kingstone, Herefordshire. Many years ago I did go into Herefordshire records office to view the original parish records of Little Birch / Much Birch and I remember them to be in poor condition on the micro fiche. I haven't gone back further as Poyner is my main family link. Also mentioned in this thread is the surname ROOK(E). William Poyner's mother was Sarah Rooke who was married to George Poyner in 1815 in Llanwarne. -

Sarah Rooke is the only ROOKE family member included in my family as she is only linked via marriage in to my main interest the Poyner's. All the records I have found point to Sarah being born in Llanwarne. She married George Poyner 10th Oct 1815 in Llanwarne and in the 1841 census was living in Llanwarne stating that she was born in the county of Herefordshire - her husband being from Gloucestershire. In 1851 and 1861 census' she declares she was born in Llanwarne. She died in 1863 at Much Dewhurst. Sorry I'm not much help.

To add to my message re Philip Gunter, journey/mason, who married Mary Tylor on 24th April 1800, the marriage entry shows them both to be of Little Birch Parish and each sign only with their marks. In addition though a John Gunter is one of the witnesses, signing by his mark with a Susannah Honds?. Still trying and hoping to find Philip Gunter's parents. Thankyou.
