East and West Dean Methodist baptism registers (General)

Whilst transcribing the above Methodist baptism registers the area covered seems to be the same for both areas.

East Dean baptisms 'place of residence' were Joys Green, Hansley, Reddings, High Beech, Pludds, (all around Lydbrook)plus a few others, whilst the vast majority of West Dean so far (just over half) are 'Lydbrook', which puzzled me, as it is the same area.

They certainly do not correspond with the CoE ex par parishes of the same names.

Can anyone clarify this.

East and West Dean ( Lydbrook ??)

I guess what you are seeing is the non conformist "Circuit" aligned to an area rather than a rigorous Conformist Parish (?)

For the record the area of Lydbrook is confusing in that it lies across the East and West Dean ex parocial areas.

Lydbrook - East Dean is Horslea( Hausley or what ever !), Joys Green, The Pludds, Reddings etc

Lydbrook - West Dean is Worral Hill, Hangerberry, Camomile Green etc

I found exactly the same thing when transcribing the Lydney Primitive Methodist Circuit baptisms. I think the simple answer is that they were not postal addresses, merely the minister describing where the parents were living. Quite often the same minister described a place as being (name of place) East Dean, (name of place) West Dean or even (name of place) Clearwell. My geography isn't too hot either!

Thank you Brian and Slowhands. It seems that the Forest "did their own thing" at times, although this is a new area for me. It certainlt has an interesting history.
