Hi
There is also an area of Bristol called Bridewell, and was used as a temporary jail, until fairly recently it was a large police station. Bristol is about 40 miles from Forest of Dean.

A house of correction for the confinement of disorderly persons; - so called from a hospital built in 1553 near St. Bride's (or Bridget's) Well, in London, which was subsequently a penal workhouse.

Thank you"admin" and Slowhands for your replies Its the Christchurch one is the one I was looking for. My 2xgrt grandfather lived there at the time of his marriage to Mary HARRIS in 1860. I`m still trying to find out who his parents were

When I lived in Christchurch my kids (and me) used to sledge down Bridewell Tump on Christchurch Meend near the campsite. Christchurch is in fact Berry Hill, The Berry Hill school where they filmed Dennis Potters "Pennies from Heaven" in 1977 is still there next to the church, as locals will know. Fred
