Name is annotated (General)

I have just received the folllowing query in an e-mail and I'm not sure of the answer to the question.
Could anybody enlighten us with the meaning of it.

What does it mean when it says "name is annotated" on a record? the family I am researching changes
its name from Burris to Burrows on census forms and church records. is this the reason why?
