Baptised Twice (General)

Hi Simone.

I have several instances in my tree where a child has been baptised twice. I have been told that no public baptisms took place in Mitcheldean during 1852 to 1853 as the church was closed for repairs. The local baptisms went to Abenhall but some families opted for Littledean non conformist church. In my family these children were later baptised again in Mitcheldean Church when it reopened. Of the other instances I, like you am left wondering why, but a second baptism certainly happens often when a younger sibling is being baptised.

Baptised Twice

I suspect it happened. My suspicion is that it was more to do do with the Poor Laws. Since 1538, everyone had to belong somewhere. If a family moved, it might well want to get official recognition in the new village. I suspect it happened in my family at one point, can't prove it though.
