Jane BAGLIN - West Dean (General)

by Jean Herbert @, Leeds Yorkshire, Thursday, June 21, 2007, 00:39 (6367 days ago)

Is anyone researching the family of Jane Baglin? I have a Jane Baglin married to Elijah Herbert. She was born abt 1816 in West Dean Gloucestershire. Census records give varying dates of birth and I am not sure which is correct, nor do I know her date of marriage.

I would be interested to hear from anyone who is also researching this family.

Regards Jean Herbert

Message for Bertha.
With reference to your reply to my post re: Jane Baglin. You kindly gave me some information on the father of Elijah Herbert, these being possible father and mother. Father's name GAY mother Elizabeth HERBERT. I need to follow up this lead but am unsure as to how to go about it. Firstly, did Elizabeth actually marry GAY or was Elijha a "mistake". I would like to find out who her father was and if she eventually married and who to. She may have had other children either prior to possible marriage or afterwards.
I have joined the Parish Records section of this site but as I am new to it I am not sure how to proceed. Could you please point me in the right direction? Eternally grateful for information already recieved. Regards Jean Herbert

Now I'm confused! According to the marriage record Elijah was born in 1812, but the baptism record states 1820? Perhaps he wasn't baptised until he was 8?

Speculation time (Slowhands & Bertha will kill me for this!)
I have found two Thomas Gays born to John & Mary in Mitcheldean.
Thomas 1 b 1783 d 1785
Thomas 2 b 1786 d 1811

If the correct date of birth for Elijah was 1812, it is possible that Thomas 2 was his father but died before he was born.

I have not been able to find a marriage for Thomas or Elizabeth; to each other or anyone else.

James GUY 1781 living in Cinderford

Speculation indeed !

Well from Ancestry I can only fine one GAY in the Forest ;-), and he is a Charles born about 1811 and living on Ruardean Hill. which is also where the HERBERTS were :-
http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=thread&id=2654

However when you look at the entry , the handwriting looks more like GUY, so pressing on :-

1841 Cinderford
James Guy abt 1781 Dean Forest Gloucestershire
Charlotte Guy abt 1791 Dean Forest Gloucestershire
John Guy abt 1821 Gloucestershire, England Dean Forest Gloucestershire
Anne Guy abt 1826 Gloucestershire, England Dean Forest Gloucestershire

so I guess GUY should not be ruled out as a possible surname :-)

and just out of the Forest in Ross on Wye:-
1841
Thomas Gay abt 1816 Herefordshire, England Ross Herefordshire
Mary Gay abt 1817 Herefordshire, England Ross Herefordshire

Or it may even be that it's none of the above!
I've put Thomas Gay as a 'possible' pending further research as per the related link below

Creeping in here, Jean Herbert from Yorkshire who started this lot off. Have you ever heard the expression "Be careful what you wish for, you might get it"? Well, this has happened to me. I only asked a little question or two maybe, about the Herbert and related families. Now I have Herbert - Dobbs - Brain - Phelps - Morgan - Haywood etc coming at me thick and fast. We thought we were the only Herberts who came to live and work in the area but have now, thanks to all your efforts - found many more.
Regarding the father of Elijah - GAY or GREY. I am not even getting ito this one, I will leave it to the experts, just wondering which one of you, Bertha or Slowhands is the first to be sent to bed without supper for arguing. I think I will enter Elijah as being spawned by an alien from some other planet as my Herbert, the last of his line in Yorkshire - is an avid Sci-Fi fan. Many thanks for your efforts, look forward eagerly for next installment. Regards Jean Herbert
