George Murray (blacksmith) of Woorgreens (General)
Hello everyone,
I found this site earlier today and have enjoyed looking through it.
I am putting up a post in the hope that someone will be able to solve the mystery of the wife of a great granduncle of mine on my father’s side.
My great granduncle was George MURRAY, b. 1873 in Ellesmere, Shropshire, ?last child of James MURRAY, (licensed hawker and licensed lodging house keeper) of Nantwich, Cheshire and Ann STOCKTON of Hankelow, Cheshire. James and Ann married in 1856 in Ellesmere and were still living there on 1901 census.
On the 1891 census, George is living at home and is an apprentice to a coach builder. On the 1901 census though, he had become a blacksmith. Incidentally, one of his elder siblings, James (my great grandfather) was also a blacksmith.
I had been trying in vain to find a marriage for George on ancestry. There are just way too many ways to spell Murray!! Last week I found a 1901 census entry for what I think is him, married and living in Gloucestershire. Even with the extra info. from that, I still can’t find a marriage and there’s nothing for him or his family on IGI either.
The 1901 census entry is;
Civil Parish East Dean (part of)
Ecclesiastical Parish St John (part of)
Rural District East Dean and United Parishes (part of)
Parliamentary Division Forest of Dean Division of Gloucestershire (part of)
Address Woorgreens
MURRAY, George Head M. age 28 Blacksmith (worker) b. Salop, Ellesmere
MURRAY, Jane E Wife M. age 32 b. Glos, Hyde
MURRAY, Albert W Son S. age 3 b. Glos, Chalford
MURRAY, Redvers C T Son S. age 3 months b. Glos, Ruspridge
I have looked on GENUKI and found the spelling of Woorgreens to be correct but that there are 2 Hydes in the county and I’m sorry but I don’t know which one is right for Jane.
I went back to ancestry for the children’s births and found Redvers is Redvers Cecil T Murray. These forenames are not known to me in the Murray family. I haven’t found an Albert before either. There were a couple of possible entries for him but neither was an exact match for the census.
The census site I used was 1901censusonline and the index had Redvers as Reavers.
Are these people in your family too? Can anyone tell me what Jane’s maiden surname was and a date/place for her marriage to George? Were there any more children and did they all survive?
Any information would be brilliant.
Many thanks.
